New O2 sensor won't affect MPG - true or false?

i had a discussion with an acura service rep today - he insisted that if your O2 sensor wasn’t throwing a code, then changing it will NOT affect gas mileage.

why do so many people here suggest otherwise? i argued with the service rep that over time, carbon buildup could interfere with the sensor’s readings - he said that if this were the case, it would throw a code.

so what’s the deal? does anyone here have proof that replacing an O2 sensor that WASN’T throwing a code actually improved mileage?

if so, please list whether it was non-OBD or OBD I.

thanks!

false… It will throw a code if the sensor is dead, but if the sensor is lazy, the ECU has no way to tell. Hence no codes. My dad just replaced his O2 on his car(not a teg, but still) and his car is now running like a champ and he gets better MPG. The check engine light never lit up.

My O2 sensor on my teg is currently in need of replacement, no code either. I know my sensor needs replacement cause I have an Air/Fuel meter and I see what the O2 sensor voltage is. He’s alternating, but at a too slow rate which is bad for MPG and overall car performance. My $0.02…

people at acura = :gay:

they don’t know sh!t.

E-DA9 how much is a 02 sensor and should i go oem or aftermarket???

Yeah…the ability for the O2 sensor to detect how much O2 is left in the exhaust gases decrease with time… That’s why sometimes if your car has logged about 80K on the same O2 sensor, it’s a good idea that you replace it…Oh yeah…it can withstand high temps, but it doesn’t like it though…you can fry one by getting one too hot…hehe…later~

I picker one up from pep boys the other day for 39.99

the most common cause of o2 failure is , fuel additives and overfilling oil over time they coat the o2 and it doesn’t perform as well as it once did. a rule of thumb is an o2 should go from peak to peak in 150ms and be able to range from 50mv to 950mv . if your o2 is lazy then yes your gas mileage will get better, but i have also seen a original 02 on more than a few cars with 100k plus on them and they work beautifully. as for the type i have a bosch 02 40$ and i had waveformsof a fact. honda one and the bosch and they were practically identical.

Unless you want to pay around $300 for an OEM one, a bosche one will suffice.
