No turn over. Possible ECU Issues

Hey guys,

I’m ALMOST done with my build, I have had some transmission troubles but I am to assume they are resolved (as soon as I get it to turn it over). The last time I put it in the air, it ran and drove. It’s been in the air for a few weeks. Now, I finally have everything back together and I went to start the car and it won’t even try to turn over.

The only thing I can think that I did different was reroute my ground over to the inner frame of the engine bay, rather than running it across to the transmission clutch cable bracket.

Now, I noticed when I turned the key over, no MFR click, no CEL on key on, engine off like normal. I played with my MFR to no avail. I checked my in line CEL switch and it did not turn the CEL on. I checked the ECU and apparently as of recent the typical G2 passenger water leak has gotten to my ECU. One of the subharnesses was corroded and the entire internals of the ECU plug ins to the adapter harness were soaked, but not corroded. I cleaned them all as best as I could with some brake clean and compressed air. One of the harnesses is still a little corroded and I haven’t tried pulling it apart. Still no CEL light, wont send power to the starter.

Do you think the rerouted ground could be causing this or is your money on the jumper harness? I pulled the top plate off the ECU and there was some slight water but no corrosion. I dried that all out as well.

Any ideas guys? I was rather pissed that I didn’t get to row it through the gears tonight to test the transmission.

Thanks in advance!

How is your battery?

Battery was pretty low when I pulled it. It doesn’t get started much so it tend to drain down. I had it on jumpers to a running vehicle for roughly about 10 minutes. All accessories work, bells, a few of the dash indicators like belts and battery, blower motor works. It does turn low when I disconnected to cables which I figured would happen. I may send it off to charge overnight. I presume it wouldn’t be the battery because my MFR doesn’t activate and the CEL light doesn’t come on like normal. And I can’t get my inline switch to flash the CEL light either.

Also, FINALLY came across a good archive thread:

Sounds to me like its important that the ground needs to be grounded to the transmission, as it’s possible that the main ground to the thermostat housing would ground out and the ground at the clutch cable bracket would ground directly to the battery. I’ll try this tonight and see what happens. ANY other insight is greatly appreciated. I’m hoping against the ECU/Harness being an issue. The only other thing I can think is the MFR completely pooped out and is in open circut and not switch grounding internally, as I can’t recall changing anything else.

Just posting this for reference when I get home:

Hey guys,

Turns out it was the ground that was causing an issue. It is evident that that ground to the transmission needs to be there. For future reference, if you’re tucking, you must wire the main battery ground to the block/transmission somehow. Try the rear of the motor to hide the wire.
