Hi guys
just wondering if you can tell me how to get rid of the anoying noise from my shift knob. The shift knob is all stock, but ever since I’ve been driving hard I get this weird noise from the shift knob, If i put my hand on it and out some pressure it get louder.
I’ve changed the clutch and bearing and also the front transmission mount. My question is do I have to change the shift link to make this noise go away or is this internal transmission problem.
A possible problem that would cause this is worn shift linkage bushings. I remedied a similar problem by ordering a short shifter (replaces bushings directly under shifter) and by ordering Neuspeed urethane bushings (replaces rear bushing that short shifter did not and front doughnut bushing on transmission).
Neuspeed bushings: $15 shipped (EBAY)
Short shifter: $40 shipped (brass bushings included, EBAY)
Total cost: $55
You can probably order these parts cheaper from the dealer, but the stock configuration of bushings are prone to lateral play (I’m referring to the ones directly beneath the shifter) and aren’t nearly as much FUN! However, brass bushings and urethane bushings can cause more noise and vibration than stock. If installed right they shouldn’t cause any more noise and should remedy the problem. Short shifters sometimes involve removing the exhaust heat shields.
