OBD-1 to 2 converter or new ecu? Hydro to Cable converter or new tranny?

Deciding on what to do:

  1. Get a converter that converts obd-2 to obd-1 or sell the obd-2 ecu and buy a obd-1
  2. Get a converter that converts hydro to clutch on the b18c5 transmission, or sell the transmission and get a YS1 LSD.

What would you do? Anybody have price figures for each option?

thanks!!

  1. First off all i’m not sure if they make a harness that converts to allow you to run an obd2 ecu on an obd1 car. Typically the harnesses that are made are used to do the opposite (use an obd1 ecu on an obd2 car).

Obd2 ecu’s are a pain in the butt from what i can gather. harder to chip and a bit more restrictive in some way?

If i were you’d i’d just run an obd1 ecu and eventually get it chipped. I mean look at Dan’s car. He’s basically running a b18c5 and has a chipped p72 (or p28, i forget now).

  1. Definitely go cable. I’m pretty sure he cable to hydro conversion kit isn’t being made any more. Plus to go hydro it will be more work and more expensive. You’d have to buy the kit, do all the install, and you’d be installing a tranny that was more expensive to begin with. Sell the b18c5 tranny (you can probably get big bucks for it!) and you’ll easily be able to pick yourself up a vtec cable tranny, you’ll most likely have cash left over to spend elsewhere (maybe clutch and flywheel?).

again colin, thanks! wow I should just email you all my questions, hehe. I read dan’s writeup on swaps, and I will be doing the c5 swap as well. I’m trying to get a hold of a jdm ys1 lsd tranny, and I guess I will start searching for the obd1 ecu. How much would the c5 ecu and tranny sell for do you think?

thanks!!

Art,

check your other post in meetings…have some input for you
