I have a B20z with b18a crankshaft pulley in my DA. Ever since the motor swap my alternator belt has been squealing on start up until I rev the engine to about 3000 rpm’s, then it stops. It also squeals when I am running a lot of accessories at once- ie. headlights, rear defroster, and blower, or headlights, blower, and stepping on the brakes.
I have tightened/loosened the belt, changed the belt 3 times thinking that they gave me the wrong one, and have even gone as far as to replace the alternator. The squealing has gotten a bit better- it’s not as loud and embarrassing as it was at first (probably because the engine used to be off on the timing, but is now fixed), but it’s still there.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be here?
TIA!
isn’t there some sort of belt conditioner spray that is supposed to cut down on squealing? but i guess that wouldn’t apply since you have a new belt. humm…
I think I’m going to pick up some of that conditioner, just to see what it does.
try taking it to a shop if u can’t figure it out urself. cuz u obviously aren’t adjusting it properly… there’s suppose to be a good amount of tension… i forget the specs, but if u can’t get it to that point then take it to a shop, if they can’t fix it u don’t gotta pay it anyways. $0.02
I fixed it. I got fed up with the squealing. I loosened the top bolt, wedged a crowbar in between the head and the alternator and pushed it forward hard. tightened the bolt up and bam… no more noise. I guess I was never putting enough tension on the belt… seems EXTREMELY TIGHT, but it’s not making a peep.
so how were you setting the tension before?
I was using a screw driver to push the alternator, but apparently I wasn’t pushing hard enough
Wait, don’t you have a bolt tensioner on the bracketry attaching your alt? My 92’ LS has one that’s used to pull the alt belt tight. Once within belt deflection specs you tighten the set bolt to lock in place.
thats odd
my 90 LS didn’t have that tensioner either. Good thing I swapped it out.
oh yes u gotta crank that bitch tight, I use a 4 ft pole
