Ever removed your emblems and wondered what kind of tape to use to put them back on? I’ve been using 3M double stick tape for a few years now, its always worked great.
3M makes 4 types of double stick tape that are widely available
Thin, just like scotch tape, but sticky on both sides… you don’t want this
Thick, made of white foam, has white and green backing… you don’t want this
Thick, made from a clear material, has a red backing… you don’t want this
Thick, made from a gray foam type composite, has a red backing…this is what you want.
Either 3 or 4 will work fine, but 4 is MUCH easier to work with and cut so it’ll fit what you need.
I never thought this was that important or special before… until today at Acura when I saw some brand new side moldings from a newer model acura. The tape used for these moldings was the gray 3M double stick tape. Its also used on the base of spoilers, and maybe some other stuff from the factory. I always new the 3M stuff worked just fine… but now I know its the exact same stuff Honda uses
Not sure if anyone else cares… but I thought it was interesting

I think you’ve got it backwards Nino, when you’re too sober to put it on straight, you have to make sure that your drunk friend puts on the others.
soontobe: There are two problems with the #2 tape. First is that its thicker as you mentioned. But more importantly its harder to get off. The tape would rather stick to the surfaces whan it will to itself. The #3 and #4 tapes stick to themselves really well and often when trying to remove the tape it’ll just stick to one surface so cleaning is a bit easier. Although if it is left on for a long time it starts to not do that as much.
Oh, and mods… maybe this should be in the product reviews forum? I wasn’t sure at first… feel free to move if necessary.
Sorry for bringing back a dead post. I’ve been doing a little searching on 3M’s website, here are five tapes they listed as useable for attaching emblems:
4229P: Professional Market, medium-density, dark gray acrylic foam, red backing, OEM use tape
AFT 5665: gray, medium-performance, double coated acrylic foam tape, cost-effective for less demanding applications
NT2000:0.51 mm thick, black thin tape, for nameplates
NT3000:0.76 mm thick, black nameplate tape
NT4500:1.14 mm thick, black nameplate tape
Now obviously the 4229 tape is the best, and used in OEM applications. But, is it available for purchase by the public, or only professional outfits? Both the 4229P and the AFT 5665 are listed for other applications as well, the NT tapes are just for attaching nameplates/emblems.
I’m not sure of prices for any of these, I’m going to do some local price checking. Maybe this could be put into TegTips.
