OEM style Fiber Glass Hood vs Carbon Fiber

anyone know which is lighter i plan on reducing weight but I’m not a fan of the CF look…also i’ve only found one company that makes an oem style fiber glass hood anyone know of anymore?

i would think fiber glass hood would be lighter

thats wat i was thinking but ppl from honda=tech seem to think other wise …they go so far as to say fiberglass is almost as heavy as the oem steel hood but i smell BS g2 hoods are extremely heavy

im pretty sure cf is lighter… you can always paint a cf hod but that would make the hood cost close to 1000 bucks! 500 for hood 500 for paint… ROUGHLY.

i say FG is cheaper because with hockey sticks, a full carbon graphite stick is much lighter than one made with carbon and fiberglass …

thanks for the info i will prolly look for a cf hood that needs work …i do body work and paint for a hobby so just material cost probably 500 to paint the teg completem plus a beat up cf hood maybe 100

if you do body and paintwork yourself, then by all means just get an old cf hood

I think the important question is not which is lighter, but whether or not you can actually find a fiberglass hood. Weights on these things vary, so depending on the manufacturer some CF hoods may be lighter and some fiberglass may be lighter. But as far as I know there isn’t a fiberglass hood available for the DA. If I’m wrong please LMK because it’s something I would definitely consider purchasing if it is ligher than a CF one.

i found one company that makes em they are 500 shipped tho and they dont give a weight…

I found a C/F hood on craigslist for $25, It was in pretty bad shape. Broken latch and had mangled hood pin holes that I manged to close up with fiber gless and patched up the latch also. Now its as good as new. I did paint it semigloss black and it fits and looks great,

Hmm i would be interested in picking up an FG hood if you find a company that sells them. I duno about that website and never heard of the company so im a little hesitant. For now I went the poor mans way and cut the bracing under the hood out. I got it from 36lbs(iirc) down to about 24. I figure carbon or fiber glass hoods weight about 17-23lbs depending so its something to think about.

i have a seibon cf oem style hood and it only weighs 9 pounds

 Time to buy a cf hood then.

when it comes to after market hoods you dont really want to go cheap unless your getting a used name brand hood, some thing no one has mentioned is that fittment and quality is a big issue with after market hood. Some have the latch brake and your hood pops open on the road, if to thin then its going to wobble and lift open in high speeds. Others dont line up right or they end up being made crocked.

Your best bet is either stripping off the underside of your oem hood or finding a good name brand hood really cheap.

cutting the skeleton out of a oem hood IMO it is just as light as a fiber glass one, but cf is the way to go if you want to spend some money, if not just cut the skeleton out. ive had all three.

:iagree:

Nice find. I would be a bit hesitant though to pay that much for shipping and not know the quality or reputation of the company… But still, a company I should try to remember whenever I get to the stage where I can paint my car.

A lot of misinformation going on here.
Most hoods that companies claim are carbon are actually a fiberglass hood with an outer layer of carbon fiber. VIS etc… Use heavy chop mat that leads to a very high resin content.
A real carbon hood would be 100 % carbon and use a foam core. This way the stiffness would remain very high while giving it very light weight.
Also the majority of the hoods out there are a wet lay-up not vacuum bagged, or infused like I make my stuff.
A properly made fiberglass hood will be significantly lighter than a steel one, but a properly made carbon hood will make a fiberglass one feel just as heavy as a steel hood.

Yeah, but like you said, does anyone actually make a full carbon hood? Maybe some of the others weren’t aware of the point you make (that the “CF” hoods on the market are not full carbon) but I assumed that was common knowledge. And in this case if there aren’t any true full carbon hoods available then it’s not even worth talking about their weight savings. In the real world what we have to compare is oem steel vs CF (w/ fiberglass structure) vs full fiberglass.

I remember back in the day (like 2001/2002) Fiber images used to make all their hoods with nothing but carbon fiber. They used to have a video on thier site thrwoing 45 lb plates off a 8 foot ladder to show how good they were. Then they drove a car over it and it survived. I just spent a weekend with Mike Kojima (the ex-Sport compact car writer now runs the Falken Tires Formula Drift team) and he and I spoke about the lack of true carbon fiber products out there. It is a shame because most people would drop their jaw if they picked up an engineered carbon piece (i.e. high modulus carbon, no clear coat, no gel coat, foam cored/ honeycomb cored laminate). Most people would consider that ugly becuase it doesn’t have the “deep” look that comes from a super thick gel coat and a shiny clear coat.

Off topic: What does Mr.Kojima want  That guy’s a legend.
