Oil dip stick- top to bottom mark is how much oil?
I was told by a friend with a Ford that the top mark and the bottom mark on the oil dip stick is a quart difference. Is this true on my Integra? The reason I am asking is I have a slow leak and my oil is less than ½ way down on the dip stick. I’ve been just adding but if this information is available it could help me.
Thanks
Yes on most vehicles, including yours, the amount between add and full is about 1 litre. So if its half way in between it’s about half a litre low.
Agreed. The difference between the two marks will be 1 quart (which equals 0.946 litres, btw). In stock applications, you technically only need to keep your oil level above the “add” mark unless you’re really stressing the engine (racing, towing, etc). The extra quart isn’t critical for engine lubrication. It really just allows supplemental cooling (the additional volume absorbs more heat energy, thereby keeping the overall oil temperature lower) and offers a buffer zone to account for oil consumption.
If you’re running a high-volume oil pump then the oil level may be more critical, but since this is posted in Stock Engine-Bay Components I assume we’re talking about a stock application.
Yep, stock motor (b18a1) . The leak is around the oil pan gasket and now I am just waiting for a few months for my motor swap.
Thanks guys. the info is great
