oil in plug chamber (i dont think it's the rings)

ok so i bought a 91 db1 two weeks ago. the car was sitting since may of 09. new battery and it started right up. drove it home 46 miles on the old oil and gas. drove fine with no issues.

replaced temp sending unit and ect switch, even though the fans dont come on when i want them too they still come on.

now i just replaced the ect today so i took it around 17 miles waiting for the fans to kick in which they did, now when i get back home i notice oil all over my spark plug cover, so i pull the plugs and cylinders 1-3 are DRENCHED in oil while #4 is dry. My initial thought was fuk i bought another shitty da with problems, but this car has every service record since 1999, and has been serviced at the same shop since then. Now my question is aside from the obvious, which i hope is not the rings, do you guys think maybe the valve cover gasket needs replaced? I just took the valve cover off and noticed that the #2 cylinder gasket that keeps oil from getting into the chamber was stuck to the head. and the #4 cylinder ( which was dry) had a different style gasket. i pulled the plugs out and the oil was stuck in the chamber, it does not seem like its coming from the pistons, it seems to have leaked alot in there, please if anyone has had this happen chime in, this is really messing with my nerves because i already have one car with the head off at my house, i dont need another one

Do you mean that the body of the plug (where the wires are) is getting drenched? Or the actual electrode/tip of the plug getting drenched?

If its the body of the plug, I’d say its the sparkplug tunnel o-rings… Should come in a valvecover gasket kit from Napa/Autozone/Checker etc. If the plugs are installed tight and the body is getting oil on it… It can only be coming from those o-rings.

If the oil is getting on the tip/electrode, then its coming from the rings, or valve seals.

well i honestly cant tell becase when i pulled them out they came into contact with the oil i know the body is drenched, i always thought with bad rings i would see smoke, no smoke. and like i said cylinder 4 is dry.

I’d try the valve cover gasket kit… A cheap way to tell.

If the top of the plugs have oil,the grommets are bad and need replacing. If there is no smoke, your ok so change the grommets and valve cover gasket.

well i clean the cylinders and plugs put them back in and the car compression was clean, you can hear the exhaust nicely, there was alot of oil in the cylinders so when i started it up it smoked for a little bit then stopped smoking, im gonna replace the gasket sometime this week.
