***Oil Leak Problem.....Please Help (Pics)***

OK…I’ve had this car for about 6 months now, and ever since I got it, it had a good amount of oil(I think it’s oil) leaked all over a part of the engine. I’m really bad with the engines and ****, so bear with me as I try to explain this. I had no idea whether or not this was a problem that was still occurring, or if it was just left there from a previous repair, so last night, I cleaned it off. After driving about 50 miles today, I popped the hood and can tell there is fresh oil where I cleaned, so I know there’s a problem.

This first pic shows the general area where the leak seems to be.

When I zoom in on the part that circled, you can see where I cleaned off last night. This entire area was completely black, but when I was done, spotless. Now, you can see that oil has crept back onto the area.

Zooming in even further, you can see how caked on the old crap is, to the left of the wires…I can’t reach that to clean, but everything to the right has been cleaned, and re-leaked on.

Here’s a close-up of where I can’t reach to clean, just to the left of those wires.

NOW - My question is - What is the problem? How can I fix it? Is this oil? Transmission fluid, maybe? I really appreciate the help I know I’ll get…this has been a great site to me so far.

At first glance, it looks like the Headgasket is the culprit.

Regards,

Oz

I would say the cam end seal is the culprit… I’ve had the exact same leak for about 2 years… Too lazy to take care of it!

No, I have to disagree, it’s his valve cover gasket. Get a new set, it’s about $25 - $35 for the gasket and the grommets that go where the spark plug (chamber/cylinder, shiet, I can’t remember the name right now, I’ve been drinking, I’m drunk, bored and pounding to gabber) meet the valve cover. If you look where the header heat shield is, you can see oil leaking down. Also you can see on top where the cam plug is, it had some oil residue.

while you’re at it, get a new cam plug, if you really want to be fancy, you can get the billet STP (I don’t think that’s the brand is, help me out guys, STK, STD, STS it’s one of those acronyms) Or if you’re really cheap, reuse the old cam plug and get some liquid gasket and reseal. A cam plug is where that black plug is on the exhaust side. Think, your distributor is on your intake cams. Make sense now? Good.

Also, to be on the safe side, replace the o-ring that is on your distributor that connects to the cam. It’s about $1.50.

Get some engine degreaser the foamy type, let it sit, get a toothbrush and scrub, if it still doesn’t come off, get a stiff wire bristle brush. the caked on oil will come off.

Aren’t you tired of the burnt oil smell by now?

Hope this helps.

I believe its the valve cover gasket also…and maybe the end cam seals. although i don’t see any new oil marks dripping from the seal itself.

Guitaraus,

See if you can take an eye level shot of the cam seal and valve cover gasket. It’s hard to tell on the camera angle where the leak is coming from.

Thanks,

Oz

Take the same pics as this one except take it at an angle parallel to the valve cover… (I.E. put the camera on the radiator and take the same pic, BTW, don’t do this with the engine hot! )

Here you go…I have the full size copies of these next three, too, if you need them. Thanks for your help so far!

cam seal for sure… did you clean up any parts of it?? i’m trying to figure out if the valve cover gasket is leaking but it does’nt look like but then again there are oil that does not look like it came from the seal because there is no line to it. but if you have cleaned that spot right under the cam seal then it is possible that there was oil on there that dripped to the right side.

And the cam seal would be where…?

it’s basically that black plastic piece that u see on the picture. the circular black piece at the end of the engine head where all the oil is coming from =P.

i got the same problem…cam seal leaks like a bitch…that is a leaky cam seal you got there, see the oil comming out from the back of it, couldn’t really tell from the earlier pics but the new pics nailed it.

question is…how hard is it to change the cam seal?

cam seal is very easy from my understanding

 Thats why i get burning smells when im doing 100mph.
My cam seal leaks too and when the engine gets really hot, it burns the oil that was leaked.

And im thinking that there is something wrong with my engine. Now we will see how fast i can take it now.

Thank you to the drunk guy that pointed that out.

Looking at the pics you’ve taken it has to be the cam plug. I can see that the plug has rotated. The factory plug was made of rubber and over a period of time will shrink and leak. I would recommend replacing it with a 96+ integra and that one will not leak. You will need to remove the valve cover so I would go ahead and replace the valce cover gasket and plug seals as well and do a valve adjust at the same time.

Joe

I’d replace that valve cover gasket while you’re at it, it’s a cheap part. And be generous with the Hondabond on the cam seal, and at the areas on the v.c. gasket where it sits on the cam ends. (don’t get any sealer inside the head of course!)

So is there a step-by-step on how to change the cam plug/valve cover gasket? Maybe a list of exactly which parts I need?

I dont think there is but there should be! I need to replace mine too.

download the helms manual … search for member XDeep, i think he has it in his sig?
