i have a 92 gsr with the 1.7 and my oil light just started coming on and then goes off then will slowly come back on. My oil is full so i am stumped
Hook up an oil pressure gauge… either your oil pump is going out, or the sensor is failing.
Check the wiring harness to the pressure sensor (on the back of the block) as well.
the oil pump failing is what im afraid of but it did not start doing this til today after i put the intermediate shaft back in so i was wondering if it might be the sensor
the sensor is still plugged in but also i forgot to mention that when the light came on the car acted like the distributor was going out
Do a check on the alternator and see the voltage output.
and now the vtec is not working…
Hook an oil pressure gauge up asap. I honestly wouldn’t drive the car unless its an absolute necessity… there’s no more ‘sure fire’ way to ruin a motor than to starve it of oil.
its weird cause the oil light fades on the fades off then will stay off
As I said, it could be a faulty sensor… but I wouldn’t trust running it without checking oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
ok ill have to get one on friday then
could it also be the vtec solenoid
Vtec solenoid failure doesn’t cause the oil pressure to drop… the oil-light should not come in to play at all in such a scenario.
If the solenoid fails you get a CEL for the pressure switch, or a CEL for the ‘ELD’ (depending on which ecu is being used), but the oil-pressure light isn’t tied into any of that, as far as I know.
even though the solenoid has a oil pressure sensor on it
i do have a cel for the eld didnt know i needed to mention that
On the lower kick panel on the driver side is a fuse box ur problem is in there do some research on here youll find it.i had the same problem
What will I be looking for
I am having a similar issue except my oil light is coming on VERY dimly lit… No rattling or odd sounds from the engine at all. most mornings it isn’t even on or at least it is so dim that in normal daylight you cannot see it… It is definitely more noticeable at night. I changed the oil last weekend and replaced the filter as I just bough the car and have been replacing common tune up items.
Honestly for a 21 year old ride the engine & drivetrain are about as flawless as you could hope for.
how hard is it to hook up a oil pressure gauge to one of these and get a pressure reading?
my oil light has not come on since that day and its still running fine and i would like to know how to hook up a gauge also
There is the port to install an external gauge to check oil pressure… (passenger-side, front of the cylinder head, near the exhaust manifold)
If you were wanting to install a permanent pressure gauge, you’d want to tap into the back of the block where the factory Oil Pressure Sending Unit is, and run the oil-line through the firewall to your gauge inside the car.
