the other day i was driving to work and hit a dirt clod and 10 mins later my oil light came on so i pulled over to check the oil level and there was none due to my oil drain plug coming completely off. so i replaced the plug, filter and filled with oil, now the car wont start. the starter is working but it just wont turn over. any ideas?
this is one of my biggest fears with my car, the plug-hole threads are shot so i have a toggle bolt in it… its in there good and tight, never had a problem with it in the time ive had it (2 years?)
but there’s always that fear that the thing will get knocked & break lose somehow.
I tried to find an over sized plug with piggyback plug on it but didn’t have any luck and i couldn’t get a regular over sized one to tap properly.
I have also considered welding a nut on the outside so i don’t have to drop the pan.
kind of like this http://classic.artsautomotive.com/HondaOilPan.htm
but i don’t know anyone around here that can do it for me.
no oil = bad news.
good luck, sorry i don’t have more to add.
Ok… Does the motor actually rotate & try to start? Or does it seem really sluggish and not want to turn over?
If it sounds/feels like its fine and it just wont turn over, then I dont know what to tell ya… But if the motor seems like its having a hard time turning over, you may have seized the block due to oil starvation.
What I would do… Fill the motor with new oil. Let it sit for a few… Then drain it. Look for metal shavings or metal debris in the new oil. If you see any shavings or debris, then its very likely that you ate a bearing due to oil starvation and the motor will need rebuilt.
the motor sounds fine no knocking or anything like that… one thing i was wondering was if there was something the ecu cut off to protect the engine because as i was pulling over the car started to bogg before i shut it off. is there something that needs to be reset? i checked fuel and its still pumping and i pulled one of the spark plug wires and inserted a screwdriver to check for spark and nothing. no spark

lol. why not just replace the pan?
as for the op, i would do as suggested and drain the oil that’s in there and inspect it carefully for any shimmer or metal shavings.
there’s a tonne that can go wrong running the engine without oil, and unfortunately it usually ends in replacement or rebuild.
cylinder walls may be scarred, crank/bearings may be toast, cam(s) may be damaged…
no oil = bad news.
you can lol but it’s money that doesn’t need to be spent, money i don’t have for a new/used pan.
I did still list it in my WTB thread a while ago, but removed it due to lack of funds.
even if i end up pulling the pan off, the new or used oil pans will have the same weak threads and thin metal and will cost more than just doing a tiny bit of welding.
why replace it when it can be rebuilt stronger than new for less money.
hey, whatever works for ya, bud.
i just know it would suck to be driving around with the thought in the back of my head
