my coolant level in the reservoir has been going down quicker than normal for a month or so and i have been topping it off but when i went to top it off i got this sticky black substance on my fingers and the little hose that guys in the tank is coated in the gunk…
possibly blown head gasket??? it doesnt over heat but i monitor the fluid levels and top off so maybe thats why it doesnt over heat…
i topped it off and drove around and the coolant is still nice and blue in the reservoir i wonder what that sticky black stuff is from ?this guy said he also just had sticky tar in the reservoir tank and he replaced the pick up tube and it solved the problem…anyone had this experience?
If it’s the head gasket , you can try and do a leak down test to see if it holds pressure, also tells you the condition of valve seal and piston rings ….. I assume if it is the head gasket leaking you’ll get reaction from looking at the radiator coolant …… I could be wrong
You can try draining the coolant from your radiator into a clean container and see whether there is any oil floating on top.
Yes, that tube gets gunky with age. Good thing you checked it. Just replace it.
i cleaned out the reservoir tank and changed the pick up tube and so far so good. fluid doesnt turn black anymore… still losing coolant somewhere as the level drops slowly but at least it wasnt oil getting into the coolant
Are you smelling evaporated coolant after running for a while? I found a pinhole leak on one of the hoses that went under the upper radiator hose that was spraying onto a hot surface and evaporating. There was never a pool under the car.
Another place to check would be behind/under the intake manifold. Those little hoses there suck to replace
