Finally dropped my oil pan today to replace the leaky old gasket and was just wondering if I need to use a sealant around the pan. In searching I have seen some mention to use a sealant of some type and others saying to just ensure that the mating surfaces are sparkling clean. I won’t be able to get Hondabond until Tuesday due to the Victoria Day long weekend, so if I do need a sealant what is a good alternative that is more readily available?
Make sure the surface is perfectly cleaned. Smear a very thin layer of HB on the seams where the oil pump meets the block, and on the other end where the rear main piece mates to the block. Any rtv should do the trick though if you don’t want to wait.
Well I got the old gasket off tonight and cleaned up the pan some. Some one engraved BABBA on the block which has me scratching my head a bit. Is there any thing else I should take a look at/ replace while the pan is off?
Not much to replace in there that wouldn’t be a pretty big job. Other than maybe an oil pickup gasket really. Suppose you could pop off the windage tray and take a look while you are in there… But if you found anything wrong in there, you would most likely have known before you got inside it, lol.
