let me preface this with saying i have searched before asking.
i am trying to install a mechanical oil pressure gauge, using the sensor where the stock switch is, next to the oil filter.
after removing the rubber housing, i have found that there are two wires where i was expecting one
looks a little like this.
my question is; am i meant to take this green thing out, and get the send from behind, or use just one of those sends that the wires were plugged into.
the gauge i have bought comes with a brass fitting to secure the hose, but there is nowhere on these fittings to screw that in, so i suspect i will be removing it
I just replaced my oil pressure switch this weekend and it does not look like what you have pictured. My switch only had one electrical connection (this device is a pressure switch that would complete the circuit to ground in absense of pressure). One question that I was asked when I was sourcing this part was whether my car had an ‘idiot’ light or a gauge. Does your car have an electrical pressure gauge? I’ll try to post a picture of the old part if I can find it.
no my car doesnt have an electrical gauge, just the idiot light.
as far as i can tell, i am looking at the right spot (according to the service manual), but even when i disconnect both of these wires i do not get any warning lights on the dash
Looks like your pressure switch is not a factory switch.
Removing the wire from the pressure switch would not result in the warning light turning on. With everything connected and turning the ignition to the ‘on’ position, but not the cranking position would result in the warning light turning on (switch closed since there is no pressure when the engine is not running). Once the engine is running the oil pressure builds resulting in the pressure switch becoming ‘open’. The switch has two electrical contact points:
where the pressure switch connects to the engine block (ground or negative battery terminal)
the part where normally a single wire is connected
