Oil pump problem? Or something else?

I bought this db1 for cheap. Oil pressure light was dim. Changed out the sensor to one I purchased from Autozone. Light stayed the same. Lately it’s been dim then flashing after 20 minute ride on the turnpike. I’ve pulled the harness from the sensor thinking that the light shouldn’t come on at all since there is no voltage to sense from the sensor. Now the light stayed exactly the same.

My questions are:

Is the oil pump truely to blame?
Should the oil pressure light be off if the sensor isn’t hooked up?
What else could be causing the light to stay on?

How many miles are you at? if you changed the sensor with a new one, and the oil level is good the only thing left is the pump not supplying enough pressure.

217,000. I honestly don’t think it’s the oil pump (as the oil pressure light should go off when the harness is disconnected from the sensor). My belief after more research is the ICU is going/is bad. Guess it’s time for the “$5 fix”.

I also have the same problem, I was able to find an icu at the local pull and pay. when i went to pay for it they didnt know what to charge me for got it for 2 bucks. Its a pain to get in and out of there. Im looking for ways to seal it off so it doesnt happen again but i have 275 on the odometer so if it took that long to go bad i may just throw it in there. the donor car only had 117000 on it. let me know if that stops your light. do you have any of the other tall tell signs of a faulty icu?

If its a 90-91 and its still obd0 then you have an oil temp sensor, but I don’t think that has anything to do with the oil/pressure light. My oil pump went out on my original A1 , didn’t hurt anything, but you hear a ton of rattling at start up and the oil pressure light comes on when it warms up.

:salute::salute:Ive swaped mine for a b16 bottom end and a gsr head (I know, but thats what i had available to me) im still obd 0 would that make a difference? p.s I dont mean to thread jack.

My DA did the same thing and a lot of other issues. But I bought an ICU from someone on here and it solved the flashing/dim oil dummy light issue. I too thought my oil pump or sensor was going to shit. ICU is a bit of a pain to replace but its straight forward, just a bunch of annoying harnesses and clips to unplug

Mt.dewpeen is right the oil pressure light is controled by the ICU

Although the ICU could be keeping the O/P warning light on if there is a problem with the ICU, it does not control the light, the oil pressure switch controls the light.

It is a pretty simple system, 12V+ is supplied to the light bulb by the cars ign. switch, the ground for the bulb is supplied buy the pressure switch, the switch is NC, [normaly closed] so as long as there is no, [or low] oil pressure the switch is closed and a ground is supplied to the bulb, once the pressure goes up, the switch opens and ground is lost, the bulb goes out.

Unplugging the pressure switch will not turn on the warning light.

The switch is a simple on off switch, there is no “part way on”, if the warning light is bright when you turn the ign. on and then is dimmer or flashing when engine is running, it is a good bet the ICU is “back feeding” a ground to the light, this is definatly the case if the light is on when the pressure switch is unplugged and engine running. 94
