ok, im in the process of taking my axle off and i got the rotor and caliper off too since they got messed up in the acident that this broken axle cause, well anyways, im sitting there putting a crowbar in between the studs and letting it hit the ground cause i cant hit the breaks to make it so the axle dosent move, so i have to use the crowbar…well i put the socket wrench on the axle nut and put a bar on the end of the socket and then i proceed to push down on it (making sure to go to the left so it loosens), and seriously i was putting all my arm strength into it, that dosent work, so i step on the bar and push down on it with my leg and then i end up standing on the bar (mind you thats 220 lbs pressure on the bar) and then im sitting there bouncing up and down on the bar trying to loosen the frickin nut. 2 socket wrenches later (broke them by putting to much pressure on theM) its still sitting there not coming off…i sprayed WD40 on the nut like 3 times about 1 hour before i attempted this…any suggestions…remember that i dont have any brakes to use…i just need to get this god damn axle nut off…so i can get the axle off…
Your gonna need an impact wrench to get that off. If you dont have access to air impact wrench just take off the whole hub assembly along with the axle and take it down to your local mechanic and have him bust it off or anyplace that has an impact wrench. Take it back home and put it back together…HTH
Just checking here, did you “unstake” the nut? there is a small indentation in the axle where the nut is punched in to make sure is doesn’t come loose… if you didn’t “unstake” the nut, maybe that’s the problem. (but i’m sure you did it, just trying to help!)
hmm I usually loosen the nut while the car is still on the ground…and i use the long craftsman breaker bar. If that breaks, just take it back and replace it lol…If the bar does not have enough leverage…just add an extension piece to it, I usually use the removable part of the arm of the jack.
I had the same problem when i went to change out my alt . That nut is hard as hell ! I even tried my friends impact he has at his house . I ended up taking the brake master cylinder off and pulling the alt up through there .
You should remove that spindle nut (lifting the lock tab of course) with the wheel on, and the car’s weight on the ground. That nut is torqued to 130lb-ft, and is a 32mm deep socket fitting (you need a deep socket with the wheel on). That is the best way to remove it. Socket wrench + long breaker bar = OFF …
I am lucky, I went to my neighbour and borrowed a huge 4-foot-long, 600lb-ft max torque wrench and it came off easy. Don’t jump up and down on anything, that is guaranteed breakage (beyond ghetto) lol.
ya, cause ive seriously stood on the jack handle that i took off and thats my 220 lbs on that and nothing, ive broken TWO socket wrenches…ive unseated the nut and sprayed it with WD40…and if you put it in gear the axle still move freely, im gonna take anthor whack at it today…u gotta remember i have to use one of those chain and long steelpeice things to hold the hub still while i try to loosen the axle nut…so its kinda hard to to keep trying when it takes 5 mins just to try to get that thing to make it stay…i think im just gonna take it all apart and take it to a shop to get it off…
Save your self the trouble of broken tools. Take out your dremel put a cutting blade on it, put a slice in the nut and you will get it off no problem with a standard ratchet. The nut should be replaced anyway!
I haven’t tried the dremel cutting tool approach but it seems to me that the hub would be in the way at least in part. I don’t think you can cut the nut all the way through. Have you tried it. If so and it worked I would give it a try because I have the same problem on the driver’s side.
Man i had that problem once, but i had it even WORSE, i had the whole hub assembly off with the damn thing laying on the ground. NOTHING to twist it off with, we had to chisel that bitch off, it was actually easier to take a drill bit and drill small holes into it in a straight line. The bit goes right into it, then u can just snap it off. But everyone is right, you need to have the tire on the car and u need at least a 3-4 foot breaker bar, and you should NOT be using wratchets!!! You need a breaker bar, u know u put the socket on the end and just turn whatever way, u dont click the socket thing, you use it to take tires off so u dont break a wratchet:p
Ok, This is how I do it every time. I have air but my impact wont turn it off. It helps to have an air hammer to get the “dent” out of the nut or else just use a chisel. As far as the spinning goes, I put a screw driver in one of the holes on the edge of the rotor and let it rest on the caliper. I use a 1/2" crafstman rachet and a 1.5’ pipe and kinda bounce/ jump on it. Hope this helps, I know you said you have the rotor and caliper off already though. But sometimes reassembly is the only way to get it done the quickest.
