? on G2Guru's Directions from Teg Tips

I know this maybe stupid and maybe I over looked this but, if I read correctly that is, do you HAVE to take off the crank pulley in order to change the timing belt? Following the directions, I wouldn’t think you’d have to. It speaks about accessing the crank pulley and then loosing the tensioner pulley. There is no mention of taking off the Crank pulley, but again this is for changing Cams while using the same timing belt. I’ve never done this and from all the posts and searches it seems everyone is always taking off the crank pulley. I just wanted to clear it up. Any help on this would be greatly appriciated. Thanks,

Jeff

If you are doing your timing belt, then yes, you have to take off your crank pulley to take it off the actual gear on the crank, becuase of the plastic cover. BUT, if you are doing your cams, then no, you don’t have to take off your crank pulley. All you have to do is pull the belt off your cam gears.
HTH

that helps alot!! thanks bro

btw, if you want general instructions, check out this thread:

add that you have to loosen all the rocker arms then pull all the camshaft holders and pull the cams out.

Tell me something, my distributor seized back in Feb, so I got one from a yard. Everything ran shitty. I bored the grooves in the distributor to advance my ignition timing as far as I could. It has run better since. But last weekend I took off my valve cover to see what was going on. I cranked it to tdc and noticed the arrows arent both pointing straight up. So the belt has skipped a tooth. Would that be on the cams or the crank? Even though the intake cam is advanced I believe it is the exhaust cam that is off. Can I just loosen the tensioner, adjust the cam and tighten everything back up? Thanks,

Jeff

hey in regards to replacing your timing belt you dont have to take off the crank pulley bolt if you dont mind cutting your timing cover off (i dont recommend this as it means you have no protection for the belt) i have done this in a pinch but like i said you will have to buy a new cover and eventually figure out a way to get the bolt off

just shoot the motor…it will save time in the long run

actually thats exactly what to do

sounds like you got a wrong distributor if i’m not mistaken. you shouldnt have to bore the grooves in it to advance it some more.
:shy:

No, its the right dist., came straight out of a 90 manual teg. But because I threw a tooth, When I originally advanced the timing it was still running shitty, so I made the holes bigger (longer) so I could adjust it a little further. It actually made a huge difference, but my car still doesn’t pull like it used to. It used to be so fun to drive, but now the car feels so slow and there’s no torque. So I really want to fix this and I finally have the time to do it.

Thanks for all of your replies so far. Oh and if I had the money I’d “shoot the engine”, but for now it’s all I’ve got.

ask him about the the burn mark on his forehead he got for “cutting” the t-belt cover off.

actually the burn mark didnt last that long. that came from getting carried away with a torch on the plastic cover (its much faster than cutting)

damn dude! that’s pretty crazy
