ON: Steering Wheel Shakes, plus Intermitten Body Vibration

So I bought an Integra GS-R

The 5th one I bought. Pretty stoked right? Well I am, it’s pretty much mint inside and out but there are a couple issues…

First off, the steering wheel will vibrate from 80km/h - 120km/h

Secondly, the body vibrates intermittently from 110km/h +

I want to hope the issue is just from tires, but you never know…

Anyway if anyone at all has an idea, please let me know!

So many things could cause that. Start with the cheapest, get the wheels balanced or borrow a set from a friend that you know 100% are balanced and go from there.

sounds like an out of balance wheel, balance them and see what happens

OK, so after coming home from SLC today I accelerated quick through 1st and 2nd. There is a fair amount of hesisitation up until 5k, from 5k - 7k the car accelerates a lot smoother. The same is felt for 2nd gear. There is also some vibration when I accelerate quick that’s felt from 25km/h - 50km/h through both 1st gear and 2nd gear.

Also, I decided to brake harder than usual, no issues there. And by that I mean there is no added vibration.

When the car was up on the hoist for an oil change, I noticed the new CV shaft on the drivers side, then looked at the passenger side. The CV boot on the transmission side of the CV shaft is split. But even worse yet is that there are 3 bolts missing. I’ll try to explain the best I can… There’s 2 supporting arms so to speak that mount the bottom back of the engine (near the oil drain plug). The one mount has 1 bolt on the engine side, and 1 on the transmission side. The one on the engine side is missing. The other arm has 2 bolts on the engine side, and 1 on the transmission side. The 2 bolts on the engine side are missing.

My question is, are CV Boots part of a safety? - And what could be causing the vibration when I accelerate quickly from 25km/h to 50km/h

its a pretty well known fact that some aftermarket axels cause vibration in the ride due to lack of the balance ring. I personally deal from this. its mostly noticeable under full throttle acceleration bt is also very noticeable right between 3500 and 3800 RPM’s

there are 3 bolts that hold the half shaft to the block but one is hard to see. thats nots such a big worry. A split axle I would take care of ASAP.

that just answer why the vibration i had after i installed the DDS 2.9. had some stage 1 axles before with no prob, but after the DSS and other things was installed got thid weird vibration like you just discribe. we look for everything and nothing is wrong and made sure its not an safty issue. now heres the answer… thank you

2 weeks ago I had the tires replaced with a set of winters on rims. I brought the rims in to a shop to have them balanced. Afterwards, I installed them.

While the car was on the hoist, the mechanic friend noticed that the right inner CV boot was torn clear around itself.

The vibration between 80km/h - 110km/h was almost gone after the tires were replaced. But the body vibration at 110km/h + was still there. As well as the vibration between approx 3k rpm and 4k rpm.

2 days ago I decided to go to the same local mechanic friend to change out the Skunk 2 suspension with a normal height suspension (mainly for winter).

After the suspension was replaced, I noticed a lower right ball joint with a split in the boot and a grey substance leaking out.

I had my mechanic friend order in a lower right ball joint as well as a CV boot. We installed the parts and I took the car out for a test drive. The vibrations were still there, but worse.

So just yesterday, I had the right side axle replaced. Took the car for a test drive and voila! no more vibrations, at all.

So all along it was the axle. And the shops Service Manager is in the process of talking with the mechanic who worked on my car, in regards to the lower ball joint and the CV Axle.

I have faxed the shop costs of the parts, which I beileve is reasonable. No install charges have been tacked on, just the parts alone.

Just waiting to hear back from the Service Manager. If all goes well it will be water under the bridge. If I’m not reimbersed, I believe I will publish the details as I have them written down when they occured. Both to forums, as well as the Ministry.

This may not seem as big of an issue to some people but, a safety is a safety and there is a list in which to follow. Clearly there have been some grey areas when my car ‘passed’ a safety.

not sure i understand what your gripe is

I should have explained from the start that the car was bought with a safety. I would assume now the previous explaniation will make more sense.

but what part wasn’t safe? an axle has nothing to do with safety. and the lower balljoint boot that was ripped either. as long as the balljoint wasn’t loose. i don’t get it. but any way glad you got the issue solved.

is a safety like a warranty? from the place you bought it from? thats the way its sounding to me.

if so it would clear this up alot.

Safety means safety inspection. That is, the car was inspected by a certified facility and deemed safe before the sale. So I assume the issue is that the problems should have been noticed by the shop that performed the inspection.

Do you have a list of what the safety inspection included, or what was required to be included? That would be a good place to start.
