Ok I think I am screwed now…
As a few of you know, I had just changed my tans fluid the other day. While doing so I ran into some probs…first off I had the wrong bolts out to drain and fill.
My problem is the largest bolt…with the 3/8’s was removed…I cleaned out the metal flakes…then I replaced the bolt and slightly torqued the bolt on…then I here a POP…oops, I tightened the bolt too much and cracked the housing…
Can I patch that somehow…I don’t thnk jb weld will hold…
What can I do…I was going to rebuild this trans soon…but now…I may have to just replace it!
Don’t use torque wrenches on tranny housings. Nothing makes me sadder than a cracked tranny housing. If the cracks aren’t that bad, maybe you -can- get away with rednecking it up with welder-in-a-tube. Arc welding it is another option, you can do that when you have the whole tranny out of the car to rebuild it. Just make sure the person who welds it knows how to weld aluminum and won’t warp the shit out of it.
Well, for now I am trying JB weld…if it don’t work…I think i will cry…lol
But, I din’t use a torque wrench on that bolt…I just overtightened it …and pulled the housing from the casing…man I am MISERABLE!
I’ve often gotten the feeling Honda should have made the housing thicker. The first time I had that feeling was when I was driving 130 mph on the freeway and a bunch of parts got sent through the bottom of my bell housing. Just get it welded when its all conveniently taken apart to be rebuilt, and next time be really gentle
Can it be welded safely…Or should I replace it…I was going to have it rebuilt in september…I wanted to find a better quality synchro as well…
What do you all think…?
I have heard our synchros are soft metal…and they make replacement synchros that are made of titanium…
