my 92 gs is overheating when it is not moving (i.e. in traffic, at a stoplight, etc.) and i was wondering if any of you guys could help me out. i checked the radiator reservoir and filled it up but it still overheats. has anobody else gone through this? everything else seems to be working just fine. oh and when the car is in motion, it does not overheat.
When the car cools, open up the radiator cap and fill it back up. You have a leak somewhere. I ended up replacing my radiator (about $100)
Sounds like a bad thermostat…do a search and u’ll find what ur lookin for.

It could be. But, in my case, when I checked the radiator, it was empty.
osideracer, if you’re radiator’s full, check your thermostat. If it’s empty, start looking for leaks.
do your fans come on . sounds like that is your prob. if not it could be a relay . for now drive around with your a/c switch on so your secondary fan will at least be on. unless that isn’t working either. also our cars upper tank on the rad. usually get stress fractures when they get old if you think you have a leak check their.
if the thermostat is stuck closed the fluid will just clog up back there. or leak somewhere else. cant remember right now (cant think). just check the thing since your unsure. spend some time instead of spending more money on things u didnt need to do.
check your fan relays, your thermostat, and coolant level. try draining the coolant out and refilling it. but the coolant shouldn’t be your problem. My best bet is the thermostat. $17 from honda I believe for the thermostat.
When you filled up your radiator did you bleed the air out of the system (if your car is so equipped)? If not, you will need to do that to avoid further problems ( the bleeder valve is located right where the thermostate is). Also, is your radiator cap in good shape? You may have a leak and the cap is not holding pressure, therefore making the leak hard to spot. To find out rent a pressure tester from a auto parts store and pressurize your cooling system to spec and see if you can find any coolant leaking out.

sorry just want to tell u my story cause i experienced ur problem it started exactly like ures…
hey i had the same poblem as u before…it started when my temp guage goes up pass the middle line when im on traffic or car is not in motion(when put in neutral it goes back)…i was thinking its just the coolant so i filled it up…weeks passed and its happening again but i didnt care becuase car wasnt stallin or overheating…months after im getting oil leaks everytime i drive the car @ short distance…@ the same time the temp guage is redlining even when im driving…i still drove it though cause it doesnt over heat and finally i got it check and the mechanic said i have to replace my radiator…i was okay with that but i got my dad to call him back to check everything thoroghly cause the radiator is only 1 year old.(only the THERMOSTAT has to be replaced)…(my friends say its the head gasket or sumthin)… a month later im loosin oil everyday(4 liters for 2 days)thats a lot of oil and its embarrassing cause i park my car @ school and it lives traces of oil leaks…sometimes i drive dry and stops @ gas station and put oil…its a lot of hassle so i end up buyin a 95 engine w/ 50k…

sorry black91 but you are wrong. the bleeder nut is located on the upper water neck. and the thermostat is located in the lower water neck.
well you should check the fans… thas my first guess… if they dont come on… check the relay
Things to check for:
-If you are constantly topping off the coolant level, check for leaks.
-Check for a sticking or stuck thermostat.
-Check the fan to see if it is working. You can uplug the plug and ground it, and it should run on its own. I did this check when I removed my A/C to make sure the switches would work independently of each other.
-Also, if you have air bubbles in the coolant, you will need to bleed it. Air bubbles lower the boiling point of the coolant.
-Replace the radiator cap. If the pressure valve is not working correctly, it will lower the boiling point of the coolant.
If the car starts to overheat:
-Turn the vents to fresh air, and turn the heat on full blast.
-Turn off the A/C if you are running it. The A/C will put a greater load on the engine and make overheating problems worse.
-Turn the car off and prop open the hood if the temp needle starts to really move.
Speedaddy, you are correct! The thermo is located on the lower hose…my mistake. None the less, you must bleed the air out of the cooling system to avoid possible engine damage.
heating problem
