my car is currently white but im gettin it painted next month and would prefer black, im tired of the white. I will get it painted inside the doors hood etc. my question is it a good idea, will it turn out nice?
it should turn out really good. i’ve always liked black tegs. cool color. just make sure that it gets painted by someone who knows what they are doing. if you’re worried, you might as well get it professionally done at a body shop. it will turn out really good if they do everything right like you said on the doors and inside and stuff. it will turn out:cool: if done right!
thanx, the place im going to take it to a pretty good place from what ive heard.
If you’re going with black, bodywork will be of #1 importance- every little flaw will show up on a black car. Be prepared to wash the car at least once every few days, and get used to swirl marks unless you are waxing every weekend. Here are some nice colors to consider… bronze, gunmetal, light gold, pearl yellow… set your car apart from the rest. But that’s just my opinion, you do what you want.
When changing the color of any car, remove everything that can be unbolted or unclipped from the exterior (side moldings, gutter rails, etc.), remove all interior and hatch trim, trust me, you’ll be much happier with the results. And expect to pay a lot more if you want the engine bay and underhood painted to match.
Either way, I hope your teg looks good!
If they’re going to do it the proper way, won’t they have to remove the old paint anyway?
Actually no, they won’t remove the paint that is on there. It’s way to involved. Either you would have to strip it and dunk it, or use stripper on the whole car. Not fun or cost effective. For a really good paint job (show quality) they would prime the whole car and spend days blocking it (sanding). But it does come down to how good the bodywork itself is. I would personally change the color of the car to something that doesn’t come stock on an Integra. That’s alot of money to make your car look like a factory black car. My opinion anyways. How much are you paying, and does that include bodywork? I’m sure like the rest of us, your car has a few dings here and there.
Black tegs are hot, only pain is it gets dirty really fast and in the summertime, u cook like KFC.

A little off subject but do you have to primer the whole car if your painting it the same color? And why is it a bennefit to take all the exterior parts off before you paint?
Brian
yes. prep is No.1
unless you’re planning on spending BIG bucks getting the whole car block sanded (they prep it by HAND instead of machine), prepare to get your car back with very wavy and ripply paint…
because machines they use for prepping (the sanders and stuff) vibrate, causing waviness when they sand your car down…(sorta like looking at hte surface of an ocean). Good thing is, it’s fast.
In order to take these waves out, they have to sand it by hand with a straight piece of wood/metal called the block. But this takes more time obviously, and gets REAL pricey.
good luck.
Prep work is critical, also the brunt of the cost. A lot of shops hate color changes, so pick a good one that has a lot of experience doing that. Keep in mind that you are going to a color that will contrast with your current color. The detail work is going to be crucial (i.e. sills, jambs, flanges, etc.). If it isn’t done, the white they miss will stick out like a sore thumb.
If I was going to change colors like that, to save money, I would pull EVERYTHING and flatbed the car to the shop. This would be the entire interior, engine, transmission, etc. Keep in mind, when you open your hood and doors you may still see white.

that is very true… especially about the KFC:)
the place im gettin mah car painted quoted me $500 for white, $600 for black and $700 for si blue body work is included in all these and as for the black and si blue that includes inside the door jams. i dont know what the average price for paint and body work is but this sounds like a decent price and they did a great job on two of mah friends cars.

hm…thatz really cheap…too cheap…
whatz the place called? If it’s Maaco, Earl Scwab or something RUN AWAY.
If you’re looking for a decent black paintjob you should be looking at spending at least $3000 US for some proper body work…
my paint job was $2800 US…and thatz because I knew everyone in the bodyshop which I worked in as a detailer for a bit…
the place is called one day paint and body, with what you guys are saying maybe i should just get it painted white, maybe championship white? this place doent like to paint side moldings because supposedly the paint cracks after not so long. thats why i wanted it painted black so tha moldings would match.
If u want a good quality paint job, Id stay away from those 1 day paint places…that was my mistake…regardless, when theres a rush, u try and finish the job in haste especially when it not ur car, true, paint wont stick as well to moldings but if the proper prep work is done, that shouldnt be a problem…the paint quality is another factor, most places mix their own paint so be careful, Im sure it’ll look good for a couple yrs but soon itll chip and fade…Id say save up and get it done right if u plan to invest time into ur teg. I know Im paying for that same mistake right now.

There’s no problem with painting side moldings if you prep them right. Do a search, you’ll find plenty of info on prepping them right. And don’t break the clips, they cost $$$.
And I agree with Armada-V… if you are determined on changing the original color, don’t go for a color that comes stock on Tegs- be original (think BMW/Lexus metallics…). And keep in mind, like Zum Zum said, if they don’t paint door/trunk/hood jambs, it will make your car look half-ass.
For the price they quoted you, it sounds like they are basically going to give the body a quick prep, and just shoot the paint. And not all paints are alike, they might be using a single stage paint or a low quality paint. To give you an idea, the last car I had painted ran me about 900 bucks in paint materials alone, with discount!

That is very true.
smokinteg91, listen to Thanh. Paint is not something you can half ass. The only way you get a CHEAP and GOOD paintjob is if you have major connections.
Like I said, I paid $2800 US ($3500 Canaidan) for mine…and that was BUDDY price…to be exact, that was HALF price.
I’m very happy with it, but you get the idea.
You get what you pay for. And it’s been almost two full years for my paint job (shy of two hears by 7 days)…driven through snow and salt too. And the paint is just as shiney as new; painted mouldings haven’t chipped or faded. The reason they don’t paint side mouldings is they don’t want to hassle the prep and materials. Click on my sig “THE MANGO” for a pic of my car taken this past July…
Hope you take our advice bro…otherwise you’ll regret it.
thanx evryone for all the advice and the mango is lookin good! the reason im even gettin a new paint job is cause my mom wants to fix my car up for my b-day. i dont think she could spend very much for a new paint job, i know i cant im broke. itz got a bunch of dents including a huge one in the back and the front bumper is al tore up from an accident. i plan on buyin a certifit 92-93 front bumper to replace that. im startin ta think i should just prep the moldings myself and get it painted white. Im not too concerned with long term affects of a bad paint job cause i probly wont have tha car for more than two more years. is there a big difference between championship white and the stock white tha car came with.
Black…
I had a black integra once and it was a B*tch to keep clean…especially near my house with all the pollen and tree crap coming off all over the paint. Well it got to a point where i had to paint the car and i had it painted at Maaco for $525 which to me sounded beutiful untill i seen the number they did on my car… After that i had to get the car repainted elsewhere for 2500, with the block sanding, metallic red in the paint which not to mention came out lovely, and etc etc… To tell you the truth its better doing it the right way the first time then messing around with those cheap places… Now i got a white integra which i am also getting tired of the paint color but instead of changing the color im going with a silver pearl added to the white which i think will come out good…and i think thats your best bet for difference without actually having to change the color…
I painted my own car, and it turned out really well. But to give you an idea on materials alone, it was about as much as that place quoted you for a complete paintjob. I would stay away from them… Definitely stay away.
