Parking LIghts vs. Daytime Running Lights

Hi all,

I have a Canadian Integra with daytime running lights. The other day i noticed that when I start my car my headlights go on (as they should) but that my parking lights (corner lamps, etc) also go on. I can’t remember if this is the way the daytime runners were designed on this car; I forget. For some reason I was thinking that only the headlights were supposed to come on and not the parking lights too. To clarify, my headlight switch is in the off position when this happens. When I switch it forward once (the little white dot) only my interior lights come on. I could have sworn that when I switched it forward once it turned on the interior lights and the parking lights. Could someone else with an Integra like mine do a quick check? I know this is a super basic question but my memory isn’t what it used to be.

Thanks

Pictures? I’ve never seen these options on a CDM model. I’ve seen the CDM model but not what the daytime running lights and the controls look like. I have an OEM factory service manual. I am research and see what I can do to help.

Just the headlights come on for the DRL. I’m from Canada too but unless sask. got their own special DRL settings then maybe it’s electrical?

Thanks for the suggestions; I’ll try to get some pictures up for those without daytime runners. I too have the factory service manual and have been trying to make sense of the wiring diagram. I’m thinking it’s electrical as well and aside from the possibility of an open in the wiring somewhere, the two main suspects are the headlight switch (on the steering column) and the daytime running light (DRL) relay (located on the passenger side kick panel).

Yesterday I flipped the headlight switch to the little white dot but while the key was out of the ignition and, surprise surprise, the parking lights came on. Next, I tried doing a test of the DRL using the instructions from the service manual but I found the instructions/diagrams to be unclear. I totally understand why people hate electrical problems; just to get my multimeter leads down to the DRL terminals was a huge pain.

On a side note, my battery and block grounds are good and so are my under-hood and under-dash fuses. I bet people would normally just say “oh well” and live with it but my alternator mysteriously started acting up (bad diodes they tell me) and I shelled out quite a bit of cash to replace it. I am starting to think this parking light situation may have played a part in that.

I’m not sure if anyone is still checking this thread but there has been an update to the electrical situation. I am still having the same problem (both parking lights and headlights come on for daytime runners) but I have found that when I unplug one of the wiring harnesses from the DRL relay (while leaving the 4-pin electrical harness plugged in), I lose the daytime runners but my parking lights and headlights work as they should when I use the headlight switch on the steering column. I thought the DRL relay was the culprit so I looked around. They want $150 for a new one but I found a used one on ebay for about $45.

Yesterday the new one arrived and I eagerly plugged it in. Unfortunately it did not solve the problem and actually made it worse! With the used relay plugged in only the parking lights went on and I lost my headlights. I assume the used DRL relay was crap and am considering cracking it open and using my voltmeter to test the circuitry. The only problem I have is I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. If anyone has experience testing the module out, some advice would be great. Otherwise, I think I might use my old DRL and leave it partially unplugged and just live without having daytime runners.
