PCV valve's relationship to burning oil?

When I bought my car it didn’t burn oil at all. I then did a tune up months later like new fuel filter, 02 sensor, and pcv vavle. Well I was told that there is a relationship between the PCV and burning oil and i’m thinking maybe that is what is going on. I bought a cheepo $2 (but name brand) valve. THe old one didn’t rattle like I was told it should and the new one did. But i’m wondering if maybe the old one was stuck closed and maybe the new one is stuck open?

I’m hoping this is possible and I just need a new Honda brand PCV valve because I really don’t want to fix bad rings or guides.

Also another cause could have been when I put mobile1 5w-30 synthetic oil in the old motor. It may have cleaned out all the carbon biuld up sealing the scratches int he cylinder walls.:frowning:

I added 10w40 and just keep adding that when it gets low now.

BTW it has 131,000 miles and for atleast the first 60k I have records of dealer tune ups. The second owner might have been harsh I don’t know. I just havent heard of anyone with 130k miles burning oil but me.

I revved it sitting still and my gf said it puffed a little light colored smoke, wether it was grey or bluish she couldn’t tell me but it smelled like raw fuel and oil. My friend said he was following me and said it started smoking probably around 4500 -6500k. I think it smokes more under stress because going up a hill accelorating in 3rd gear I could see a haze behind me:(

if its stuck closed you will have oil leaks like crazy cuase of the pressure build up in the crankcase. try puttin a breather on it .?

the PCV valve is only supposed to let blow by gases back into the intake system. When it screws up, oil gets past it and goes into your intake manifold…then it burns.

i don’t know the relationship between the pcv valve and such, but i do know that honda motors consume oil on a normal basis. mine does, my dad’s does, and my cousins does ('91, '94, '97 tegs). nothing major just about a quart every three months. however, mine burns very little, maybe 1/8 a quart every three months (i’ve basically got a new motor).

mine burns it at about a quart every 3-4 weeks. My dad said that he would just keep buying oil for $1.30 instead of paying a lot more to either have the rings or valve guides replaced.
