Pls help identify some wires (several questions)

  1. Correct me if I’m wrong, the yellow wire is 12+ volt battery wire?

  2. Whats the purpose of that black thing in-between the yellow wire?

  3. Do you see that pink wire by itself with a butt connector at the end of it? what is that for? the “install doctor” web site doesn’t mention any pink wires.

I assume this harness is for a stereo?

If so, what is the model of the stereo?

  • yes
  1. Whats the purpose of that black thing in-between the yellow wire?
  • It is an inline fuse

-Dont remember exactly but when i did mine there was one like this and it was the remote switch that is for your power antenna.

Can that thing be opened to check to see if the fuse is good?

Sure can… pry it open with a flathead screwdriver or use your fingernails…

The pink wire may be a dimmer control or a phone feature. The amp remote wire and power ant wire are always blue or blue with a white stripe some head units have both.

The black box is a line chock. [noise suppressor] there is no fuse in the box, the HUs fuse is on the back of the unit next to speaker/power terminal.

I would pull some tape back to see if the pink lead is connected to some other lead, there should be no pink lead on KCD-138 harness…

In case you havent been told lately…We love you FCM :stuck_out_tongue:

looking at that pic makes me want to puke. why must people hack up dash harnesses to install radios.

If you need it i have a the radio connector that is for the dash harness. it has about 10inch of wire on it.

Wow. I’m the type of person who gets “second opinions” on info. I actually go to two other forums and post the exact same post topic. I accept the majority of same answers. But now I have to be really carefull now. Most of them said for sure its an “in-line” fuse.

Thanks FCM for not skipping homework in high school. You straight A student!

To answer your second paragragh, when I removed the old HU I just reinstalled the new hu on that harness and it work fine. The new HU came with a harness in the box but I didn’t bother to install that since the old one fit.

The ones with the in line-fuse usually have one or two locking clip on the black box and it shouldn’t be too hard to open… if it has locking clips… just open it up and see if there’s a fuse inside… if not then it’s what fcm said… a line chock.

It is possible there is a fuse in the box along with the line choke, Alpine and a few other manufacturers did install the HU fuse in with the line choke on a few of their models.

You should be using the harness that came with the new HU, especially if it does not have the line choke, newer HUs have it built into the HU. 94

FCM- it belonged to a KDC-716s motorized face. As you know those were discontinued because of a bad ribbon cable.

No fuse or line choke in NEW HU box. In the old one… I don’t remember it was a decade ago.

RATS really? I already installed the new HU with the old harness. Will that damage the new HU with two line chokes? Hope not. If you say so, I will cut the old one out. Let me know.

There is no indication of a pink lead on the KDC-716S either, so I am still guessing it was added or maybe it’s just a faded orange/white illumination lead.

As long as the pin out is the same, for the leads you are using, as the new harness then you can not do any damage.

Did you check and make sure the pin configuration is the same? 94

Yes thanks to “modified life.com” and “install doctor”. Thanks.
