poor mans type r hp?

ok so im building my poor mans type R, i got the rebuilt stock b16a head, the b18c1 bottom end with 25 over typer pistons (usdm) so the compression should be 10.6. its going to be running stock and revved to 8 often which it should have no problem doing. but im wondering what HP will i be looking at roughly, i have a dc 4-1 header intake and greddy cat back with random high flow cat. heres a pic of the 25 over type r pistons i will post pics of my build once i get the parts from the machine shop. but just curiouse what i can expect. my friends are telling me im wasting my money that there slow and would be happier with a b16a. are they full of shit or what cuz now im worrying. oh ya and im running a b16a tranny. thanks

oh ya also im going to install a walbro 255 lph fuel pump, will this hurt my ls or should i install it with the motor? my fuel pump dont sound to healthy

they are cheap so if it doesnt sound good then do it. but beware they arent needed unless going turbo.

so is the stock ls fuel pump ok for my new setup i hope to have then setup in and running by january

With stock cams and other components, the hp won’t be much over 150whp. But if you upgrade the cams, header, exahaust, and the ECU with a chipped ECU, you could see numbers in the 170hp range. There is no exact “this mod = this hp” calculation, but these numbers are average figures from a few poor man’s ITR builds that I’ve done. Best of luck.

i mostly wanna know if its worth building or just drop in a b16a. as stated it already has greddy exhaust 4-1 header, intake, and i was going to have the ecu reprogramed by inlinefour. but if i can drop less into a b16 and get same results then id rather go that route

hey before i drop 300 into the crank anyone running this setup with type r pistons happy witht his setup, like is it more tq then a b16a? or a ls vtec with gsr piston not b16a.

The extra torque is very nice. Very worth it IMHO.

which one? if i do ls vtec im going to run eagle rods and type r pistons because i need to stay at a decsent compression ratio with only 91 octane here. and the monsey i save on the crank repair i can buy eagle h rods.

Hey any one of those 2 motors will kick the hell out of a B16. Either the lsvtec or the poor man R. I have had a Lsvtec, b18b w/gsr head. I am going to build a Poor man R soon. I will have gsr block, b16 head, and usdm pistons also. I am thinking that the Ls/vtec will have more TRQ due to the longer stroke from the b18a/b block. But I feel the poor R will have more HP due to the higher CR. So maybe at the flywheel the LSVTEC will have roughly 130 TRQ??? and ??HP as for the R… Maybe 125 TRQ and 190 HP like a Type R would.

This is all a rough guess and my numbers are not exact. So the R would have less trq by only a few LBS but way more HP and the LS/VTEC have more TRQ but less HP.

Now remeber what you wanna do with your car. If you wanna run 1/4 miles all the time then I would think LS/VTEC for the TRQ. But if ya wanna run quick rolling power like freeway runs and that crap then do the R. Either way its better then a B16. Only down side is that if you want high top end then youll wanna get a different transmission. That b16 one has low ass gears.

Either motor you take you will really need to get rid of the B16 stock cams. Maybe get soem CTR or ITR or even GSR cams, all of those will add HP over the B16 ones.

Like I said before this is all based off of all my endless searching and reading but may not be 100% correct.:gunleft: Flame me if you want.:gunright:

well cost wise is leaning to ls/vtec. i have both motors here and the ls is in perfect condition. the only thing im trying to find out is if stock rods that are shot peens and arp rod bolts will handle 8,000 rpm daily driver, i take my car to redline often so id like to take it to 8 without worries, if this aint possable then ill just get some eagle rods.

That setup with the 10:6 comp should put you a hair over a stock b16a or b18c. Its hard to see a huge hp gain with this setup.

my guess is 150whp-160

im not worried about hp as much as TQ

if your that worried about torque then build yourself a cr/v-tec
