*POP* During acceleration. Halp!

During take-off in 1st gear if I give it decent throttle I get a loud pop in the front end. Just one click. Occasionally during braking I will get it as well but not all the time. Once it happens off the line, it wont happen again until I come to a complete stop, then take off again. Seems like I can feel it in the pedals and steering wheel but Im not sure whats causing it.

Recently I noticed my power steering rack boot broke on the passenger side which is getting replaced on the boot arrives. The popping has been happening since before that went.

I jacked it up and checked 12 and 6 o’clock for wheel bearing problems as well as 9 and 3 o’clock for tie rods but there was no play. Any ideas? Should I be focusing on axles? If they were going bad I would hear clicking around corners too right?

Other than that I’m out of ideas. I have a traction bar in the front but it doesn’t seem to be related from what I can tell. Thanks!

what brand traction bar you have?
some make noise just like you discribe.

I hope that’s all it is. Its a Full Race bar. It use to creak really bad under braking, then I sprayed some wd40 on the spherical bearings and it completely stopped. Its hard to figure out if that’s what is causing the problem though!

im not to savy on those sphericle bearings but try to pack them with grease see if that helps.

As a follow up I havent had a chance to really dig into this more. It was suggested that the rear motor mount could be going bad, this causes a bag against the frame during acceleration.

Also a lot of threads suggest maybe the cv joints. Although the noise isnt heard around a turn, and generally would be constant and not just on accelerating from a stop?

Ideas on those?

Do u happen to have adjustable upper control arms? Just curious.

^^No, they are stock.

Still no luck with this. I got under it yesterday and greased up the spherical bearings… nothing.

I tried rocking the engine back and forth to check the motormounts but they didn’t budge. I inspected the mounts and they seemed fine, not perfect but nothing that would cause a problem. The rear mount seems to be somewhat cracked a bit but still in tact. In the meantime I bought the Prothane mount insert kit for the two upper side, and rear mount. Ill slip those in to see if they help or at least eliminate that possibility.

Any advice on cv joints? While it was jacked up I got under it and pushed and pulled a bit on the axles to check for play and they had little movement (which I think is typical?) Just I don’t know where else to go!!

Once again, the single noise is only on acceleration from a stop in a straight line. I can feel it in the pedal. Even shifting to the next gear and accelerating doesn’t cause the same noise. Its almost as if, once momentum has shifted forward and the pop occurs, that’s it until you come to a stop again.

GAAAH! Hopefully it will survive back-to-back days of autox this weekend. Haha
