Possible TEG tips: Speedo cable insert lube

How to install the C clip

I have follwed nafreak’s method to remove the speedometer cable. But the C clip came off with the rubber boot. I don’t see how the clip hold the cable to the tranny. Can anyone show me how to install the clip? Is there any picutre showing how the clip is installed?
Can I drive my car without speedometer cable?

It’s been SO long since I have done this, I dont remember the exact details. This is the only pic that I have that might help you…

If your C clip came out with your boot then it probally wasn’t secured properly. The boot goes over the clip, and if I remember the clip was a b1tch to get back on. There should be a groove that it slides in.

HTH!

I also could not get the clip back on. I must’ve tried for an entire weekend. So I put the cable back into the transmission but the speedo still works without it being secured down. I have an automatic but I don’t see why it should be different on a manual.

the chip is a POS!
it helps to take the intake off!

i droped the clip a few times and lucky my screewdriver was magnetic so it picked it up…
it almost fell into some space that was unrecoverable…

Does the clip secure the cable to tranny?

Yes, there is a groove on the tranny end.
But after sliding the clip through the groove, and it looks like your picture, I still can pull the cable out!
Is it possible that the clip is designed to hold the rubber boot (from inside) instead of the cable?
Since mine is also an automatic, I just did what NFULFX did. I just had a test drive and it works.
Thank you Nafreak, NFULFX

air intake??

I didn’t take the intake off. I can reach the speedo cable without taking the intake off. In fact, I don’t know how to take it off.
There are 3 small pipes connected to the intake hose. I don’t know how to remove those two connected to throttle. Just unplug them from the hose?
Mine is a 92 LS automatic.

Thank you guys

I should have found this website 3 years ago.
My car has the weird noise since I got it 3 years ago. But it only happens in the winter. I took it to car-X and they told me it might be the CV-joint. The noise is still there after replacing the driver-side one. Then got the passenger-side one replaced. Guess what? The noise is still there. One mechanic even broke some seal ring on the tranny while replacing the CV-joint. It’s not the end of my nightmare. One year later, my car got a breakdown on I-65. Acura dealer told me the CV-joint blew up cause it’s an aftermarket product. A genuine Honda CV-joint doesn’t fix the noise. I started to search the diagnoses of this problem on Internet couple days ago and found that it could be the speedometer cable. It’s amazing that this problem can be easily fixed. I’ll keep on trying to get the clip back on if possible.

Thank you guys.

Here are some images I have from when I did mine.

It looks like the rubber boot is ideally supposed to be OVER the clip, that’s
why the edges of the boot are extended. So when the rubber boot is over
the clip (like the outline), it prevents the rubber boot from sliding upwards
and exposing the cable to dust and dirt. I don’t think the clip necessarily
clamps the cable in place. Why Honda designed it to be a pain to install,
I don’t know  but like most people I’ve left it beneath the boot and
the cable works fine anyways.

I lubed my cable last August and all the noise is still gone. Like the rest of you, I had a hard time figuring which way the clip goes back on. The boot is a BITCH to get back on over the clip. Probably shrunk over the years. Here is how I got it back on: While you’ve got the cable loose, pull hard on the boot and remove it from the cable. Then go inside and clean off any crud and then cover the the boot in vegetable oil. Probably would be better to just soak it a few minutes. Now put the boot back on the cable, insert the speedo cable in the tranny and then twist the boot around until it finally slips over the clip. Basically just squeeze the hell out of the boot while moving it in a screwing motion and it will catch the clip and you can screw the rest of it over the clip. Before I tried the oil, I couldn’t get the boot to slide over the clip and catch.

i don’t know if im an idiot, but there are many wires going through the firewall on my car. which one is the speedo cable? i know you all say it goes into the tranny, but im a n00b of 2 months and i dont know what the tranny looks like or where it is. ha! could someone make some pics with arrows or something? sorry to be a pain!
p.s. anyone in new york wanna get together? im in long island. nassau county

Sorry to bring this one back but I have a problem. I tried doing this last night everything seemed to go smoothly until I tried putting everything back together. It seems like I shouldn’t have any exposed wire outside of the cable sleeve thing but I do. It looks like this:

Where the yellow line is represents where the inner cable part meets the black sleeve thing and metal collar. On the left of that is where the cable sleeve-like thing (black) and the metal collar thing are. Should I have that much exposed wire? I would think not since my speedo is no longer working. Does the collar thing actually slide into the VSS? Mine is not.

Is the cable just not sliding into the speedo itself? It seems like it is in a way but it obviously isn’t. When I pushed the cable in it got to a point near the end where it seemed like it was going into something. It gave minimum resistance and then stopped like it would go no more. I assumed that it was in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I took a look at it today and it seems that the cable isn’t going into the instrument cluster for some reason. I hope I don’t have to take the dash apart. Any ideas?

Is the inside of the cable sticking out ? Try turning the cable to get it in there. If anything you might have to take the whole cable off the car and then try to get it in there.

Believe me, I have tried. I am in the process of trying to fix it via the dash. I’ve got everything apart but it is still giving me problems. I think the problem lies in the cable jacket itself. Oh well, I’ll keep trying. Thanks anyways.:salute:

I have a question. What exactly does this noise sound like? I have a noise behind my speedo it sounds but not a squeeky noise. It sounds like a noise that only happens when Im at higher RPMs and it sounds kinda like a rattlin type noise. Is this the sound from it?

So I finally got around to replace my speedo since mine has not been working for I don’t know how long. I ordered a new one from the dealer. Well it worked fine for one day and then while driving it stopped working. I thought maybe there wasn’t enough lube, so I lubed it like in the article. But it doesn’t work, the needle barely rises and comes right back down. The clip is on fine, the cable is all the way in on the transmission side. I don’t understand why it’s not working.

The only thing I can think of is the assembly on the transmission where the steering lines and the speedo cable goes into is loose. It’s not tight and its tough to see why. Anyone has any ideas?

Alright so I tried to take a crack at this once again. I took apart the dash one more time. Relubed the cable, did everything else, clip is on. So it worked fine for that one day like normal. Then this morning, it was really cold out and it was making a ticking noise, then it stopped working again. I don’t know what else can it be? Could it be the cluster? That cable is brand new btw.

Ok so i was installing guages last night …and i tried to get even a mm more slack out of the cable…and i pulled the end part off the speedo…like the jacket and clip and stuff…did i fuck it up permanently, or can i just work this back onto the speedo cable and squeeze it with pliers or something?

Same thing happend to me, I just bought another cable. I just didn’t want to deal with the headaches of taking everything apart. Next time, take out the cable from the transmission side and then take your cluster out. You’ll have more slack.

The cable goes in a certain way into the speed sensor. It has to sit inside the groove properly, otherwise it’ll catch and make ticking noises, or not work at all.

As for quality_shit, miens been like that for 3 years. Just sldie it back on the same way it was on there and clamp it down a bit more. It’s not the best, but it works. Just remember for next time that it’s VERY fragile and can pull off agian very easily.
