Just changed my speedo cable and have been reading this thread.
I had trouble getting the old speedo cable out from the firewall.
I had to look up from under the steering wheel, the metal piece on the cable was catching in a creavice.
Putting the new speedo into the tranny - you can’t easily see that the outer sleeve has a slit in the far side where the c-clip sits and meets the slit in the speedo. It actually does hold the cable in place after a wiggle or two.
Don’t ask about the final boot fitting…
Thanks a lot! fix mine too!:auto:
In the end after messing with my old one for 3 years buying the new one for $35 was the best thing to do in the end.
I discovered that if you have to be careful not to put too much grease in or else it will go into your speedometer and ruin it.
Also the absolute pain in the ass it is to replace it once is nothing compared to having to mess with it over and over again (next day sore backs remembered).
In case anyone ever finds themselves in dire need of that C-clip you just lost, use an rc car body clip. I got one and bent it to add more tension once I got it in. The flat side is what will fit in that “slot” in the transmission hole, the curvy part will lock around the “neck” itself. Also, some of you may have noticed that if you reeeally push the cable into the transmission, you’ll find that the retaining slot on the cable goes past where you’re supposed to lock it to the tranny. Back it off a TINY bit and your clip so snap right on. I could only get my rubber boot on halfway with the replacement, but it works great now! plus my vtec is engaging once again >=)
Oh another tip for those of you who are removing their cluster for the first time (and not touching the tranny side): Push the left side all the way into the dash, so you can pull the right side out a bit. It leaves just enough room for someone with small hands to unclip the speedo cable from the back. HTH
anybody w/ pics of this how-to? the one in teg-tips sucks ass
x2^^^^
Plus… are we talking about greasing the part that goes into the back of the cluster? How do you grease that part if not?
Does that part in the back need to be greased cause I just installed it without it…
Looks like its that time of the year when this things make noise. I installed mine in 2009 with a brand new OEM one. I never did put grease on the new one and it never made a noise after I installed it.
but to answer your question. I don’t think you do. Just the “inner” cable only that is if your reusing and cleaning the original.
I highly recommend buying a brand new one from the dealer. I was about to regrease my original when I saw rust on the inner cable. I just bought a new one instead. No noise and chirping since 2009.
this thread needs updated pics…sall i’m sayin
Oh ok…kool…I have no problems with mine. I got mine from Acura of Peoria…It’s kind of a pain to install though. Make sure it installs into the cluster first than go for the speed sensor.
