Is it at all possible to convert from non ODB to ODB1?
If this could be done you would be able to use a 92-93 ECU in a 90-91? Correct? Of course wiring changes would have to be made but what?
What need to be done to cnvert to ODB1?

check Dan’s guide to engine swaps. you would have to change the distributor, O2 sensor, injectors, and a few other things…
Well, I’m not sure thats what he is asking. Dan’s guide tells you how to run an OBD engine in a NON OBD car, but not how to actaually use an OBD ECU in a NON OBD car. For that you need a $200+ Jumper. Plus you need to run all the sensors that the OBD engine came with, which is what Dan’s guide tells you how to do.
I know this because I put Dan’s guide under my pillow before I go to sleep every night.

yes, it is possible. But really not necessary in most cases. There are very few reasons why you would want to spend the extra money and put forth the extra effort just to switch to obd1.
I am going to have to switch in order to pass smog here in cali–so thats my reason for doing it. If i didn’t have to satisfy these tough swap laws then i would run non obd—its much cheaper and much easier.
here are the methods i know of switching to obd1:
-buy a conversion harness. I know a guy who will sell you one for $250. But i’ve never tried the product, so can’t vouch for its quality.
-swap the stock harness out for a 92-93 harness. This is what i am currently planning on doing. I have no idea how easy or hard it will be, but i’ll find out.
-Do lots of splicing. You can take parts from a 92-93 harness and splice it into you stock one. There is a lot of splicing that needs to be done, and it may be very complicated. This is my “plan b”
Basically i’d suggest staying non obd, unless you have a real good reason to change.
One serious way I would go about converting OBD0 to OBD1 is using a complete OBD1 underdash harness. It sounds pretty crappy but it is probably the only feasable and sure fire way to squeak past the Ref. One of the checks that the state ref sometimes does is acess the ECU for trouble codes and ECU functionality. Since OBD1 requires the computer to be accessed in a specidfic way, the lack of the MIL jumper will cause you to fail since the jumper is not present and they will view the MIL circuit to have been “tampered” with. Since there is no serious differences between OBD0 and OBD1 Integras, I would imagine that using a 92-93 Integra dash harness could be just a matter of just plugging it in. I’m not completely sure about this but if i had a chance to compare a 90-91 Helms with a 92-93 Helms I would be able to determine how difficult this would be.
Colin, I’ve been keeping you in mind and have been probing that REF friend of mine. He says that the usual test for functionality involves just checking if the check engine light does its self test at ignition on. The only time he would actually access the ECU is when there is an anomoly encountered during the visual inspection like an extra or missing sensor. Another reason why he would access the ECU is if the car is having trouble passing the pipe test… . ignition timing is incorrect etc. Let me know if you have any other questions.
i am STILL in that same situation. damn. i’m deciding to just run the car non-obd. the smog thing is no big deal for me. now all i need is the parts. any hook-ups?
elmer, replacing the whole harness is my current plan. I’m purchasing a totalled 92 GSR, so i should have all the parts i will need. Hopefully its not a terribly difficult swap… i’ve never seen exactly what all the harness entails, so i’m not sure how much work it will involve.
i had been wondering how closely they check the obd system and the ecu. The ref i talked to said that i would need to have the right systems, but i wasn’t really sure if they made that something they check everytime, basically i just don’t want to risk it.
Hopefully i should have the GSR within a month or so. And when i get it i’ll yank the harness and see exactly what i’m dealing with.
i took a in car harness on a 93 integra and put it in Shane’s Orange 91 LS when we did a swap from brown to black interior for his dash Can we say hell on earth? that was the hardest think i ever did everything did plug up tho btw.
