I’m sitting here looking out the window waiting for them to show up.

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L

24" Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP

Spyder3pro monitor calibration

The .mil must not be paying that bad…

Dude James, how much was your screen calibration kit?

Wanna rent it out?

I’m not complaining, but it’s nothing to brag about either. My basic pay as an E-5 with over 4 years is $2335. In May I’ll be over 6 and get about a $100/month raise. Once you start moving up and getting some years under your belt it’s not bad, but starting out is pretty rough.

However, money management is the key for me.

I got it for $140.

You can find the Spyder2Express for $70 on Amazon.com

That’s pretty reasonable. If anything, you guys (USCG) deserve more pay.

Yeah, I hear that. I’ve been out of college for going on four years and that’s about how much I’m making right now. If I stay here at this firm I get a ~$140 per month raise in April. Cost of living is so damn expensive here in West Los Angeles, though.

I’m trying to save the little pennies I have to buy a 17-40 f/4L. I recently got into taking pictures at the race track, so that 70-200 f/2.8L that you got would be a dream for me.

I’m looking forward to seeing what it can do, especially considering you will be using it on the XT. I’ve been browsing the photo forum on Honda-Tech and it’s full of n00bs with 50Ds that swear you have to have the best camera to take a decent picture.

Those aren’t just the noobs.

This.

Deployment cash don’t hurt either. 6 months in a-stan = no more debt and our 5-year anniversary in Germany.

Well, we also get BAS, Clothing Allowance, BAH and if you’re over seas like me, a COLA (cost of living allowance). In the end I make about $3500/month, I don’t get BAH, but I get to live rent free (elec, water, gas also paid).

So it’s not too bad.

I don’t know how you’re living in CA on that pay. I could never make it with a family and everything.

I was considering a couple of the L F/4 lenses, but I plan on using them for weddings too, so I want to stick with the f/2.8’s for now.

N00bs always think you have to have the best camera, but the reality is it’s only as good as your lens… and even more so, only as good as the photographer.

I’ve turned out a lot of pictures with my old Nikon 8700 (p&s) that people didn’t believe came from that camera.

I do. You already said it before:

I have to be very disciplined. I took a pay cut to be at the job I am now because of the connections and needing to be somewhere that I can learn the whole litigation process. I was only planning on being here for a year. Now that the economy and the job market suck, I’m reluctant to go to another job, even though I’m now overqualified for the one I have now since I got another certification. Despite the shitty pay, I’d rather be stable and penny-pinching than unemployed and broke with so many jobs now being unpredictable/volatile.

2009 might be another year of thrift for me. :bored:

Yeah, that’s true.

Hopefully the economy will turn around and you can find one you’re qualified for.

Ive seen them on quality LCDs and was not impressed for the price. This one will upconvert to 1080p which I know is not bluray but good enough for me.

and ive heard fireproof is good. I havent seen it, although i have it.
Maybe Ill watch it friday when my dvd player gets here.

I don’t know man, I had an upconvert DVD player too and it can’t come close to blu-ray.

Just get a PS3.

It would be a dream, however don’t overlook the 70-200 F/4L

It’s cheaper, and if you’re not shooting in low-light situations it’s great… (oh… and it’s lighter too… hehe)

Either of those lenses would be a dream. I shoot at the track with my EF-S 55-250 IS. Pictures come out pretty decent.

OK… I never looked into the price of the 70-200 f/4L. Wow. Amazon has it for $600. I won’t be buying one (because it’s so huge and not the best for a walkaround zoom) but that’s a steal!
