Post SKUNK2 problems

hey everyone, i just got a set of skunkworks series 1 coilovers for a trade, and i keep hearing about problems with the skunk2 coilovers. i havent heard of any people locally with problems, and most of them have skunk2’s on their cars. just wanted to know what exactly happens with the coilovers that makes me leery about installing mine. I DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT CAMS AND GEARS, ETC!
thanks everyone

I have Skunk2’s and I have no problem with them. The ride can be a little more harsh if you’re using stock shocks, but other than that, they’re great. G2Guru is also using them with Koni yellows and he likes them.

If I remember correctly, Group-A Motorsports says there really isn’t any differnce between the Skunkworks and Skunk2’s.

HTH

does anyone know the difference? I’d be quite interested in that.

Z-speed, skunkworks, and skunk 2 are all the same…
My skunks are fine with koni yellows…a little stiff though, cus i ride on there drag launch kit… 900 lb spring rate all the way around.

I thought it was the old skunkworks ones that were the ones to avoid, and that the coilovers produced after they restructured the company (hence the namechange) are pretty decent?

i’ve got the skunkworks coilovers on my car. I bought them used. The previous owner used them for a year, and i’ve used them for a year ----so they’re 2 years old and still work great. A little bit of the powder coating has chipped off on the upper coils (but nothing major— maybe the size of a dime).

the skunkworks and skunk2 coilovers should be exactly the same. The only difference is the name. They started out being called skunkworkds, and then for legal reasons they were forced to change their name. That is why the older stuff has “skunkworks” on it, while the new stuff is labelled “skunk2”

Off topic, but 4drB16, could you post some pictures of your car? I noticed your sig and said WOW!

to the best of my knowledge, skunkworks are considered to have much better quality than skunk2. skunkworks are the older generation skunk2s and supposedly to be better engineered than the new skunk2 products. That’s what my friends tell me anyways, they all had skunkwork coilovers and said that it was much better than the skunk2 ones.

thanks for the info everyone, i’ll give them a try, if i hate them, i’ll sell them! they go on with my agx’s/gr2’s this weekend:)

Skunkworks Forced Namechange

From my understanding, Skunkworks was forced to change their name because NASA was using the Skunkworks title as a registered trademark since the 70s or the 80s.

I’m not sure if they changed their manufacturing methods at the same time as the name change or what.

I have a set of Skunkworks coilovers that I purchased from their facility in Hayward, CA (I live about 45 minutes away) new in January of 1998…springrates 500lbs in the front 400lbs in the rear. I’ve been riding them ever since over Tokico Illumina struts. The ride is very stiff, some people who have taken long trips in my car think its too stiff, some think its the perfect stiffness. I personally am looking into a softer spring. Other than that, I have had ZERO problems.

skunkworks, skunk2, pilot, z-speed…etc. all of those companies were manufactured through apple industries. Skunkworks=Skunk2.
