power locks question

hey everybody, i bought a 91 ls but have gs-r interior so that means i got a power lock switch on the door panel. the car has alarm but doesnt have the power lock feature. i’m about to install aftermarket actuators. i was wondering if i can wire the switch to the actuators or the alarm brain and will i be able to use the switch also to lock/unlock my doors?

Yes you can, you will need a set of “off-board” relays wired like this… http://www.the12volt.com/doorlocks/page3.asp#arp Actuators/Reverse Polarity, connect the switches to the same place as the alarm.:whisper:94

thank you. that diagram is very helpful but i got another question. how do i know which wire from the alarm brain connects to 86/85?

What is the make and model of the alarm?

You would use the door lock outputs from the alarm, the relays require a low current neg.(-) pulse, all alarms have at least that.:whisper: 93

well i know its a KARR brand alarm but i don’t know the model. but yea i just order the actuators from ebay. ima also do the 4dr handles too so hopefully i can do this power lock right. i guess i’ll just try n find the output wire from the brain.

check this out. i got everything connected but the actuators ain’t working still. i’m thinking i connected 86/85 to the wrong wires. i searched online and it says that for DA, power lock + is green/white and power lock - is green/red but i’m thinking i can’t connect the relay to those wires because my model doesn’t come with power locks anyway. am i right? does anyone know the lock outputs for a KARR alarm?

Without a model number it will be hard to know wire colors.

How many wire harnesses are there on the alarm?
Is there a a 4 pin harness with thin gauge wires?
red
green
red/black
blue
If so the red and green are the door lock outputs, should be low current neg.(-) pulsed outputs.

What wires did you connect to 85 and 86?:hmm:94

BTW, do the door locks work if you just supply a momentary ground to 85 and 86?

it’s not a 4-pin harness. :frowning: i found a red wire but not a green. i was also switching some wires around and when i put a certain wire 85, it made a noise from the relay where it goes buzzzingg until i disconnect it. what’s that buzzing noise? bad connection maybe?

Wrong wire.

How many harnesses and what color are the wires?

ok i got the wires right, it was a grey/red and grey/green. but the actuators are only locking the doors. it can’t unlock it. any suggestions?? i also didn’t install the switches, it just wasn’t working for me. i don’t know why.

You have something miswired.

to find the problem take the alarm out of the equation, unplug the alarms lock and unlock leads, [gray/red and gray/green] from the relays #86 of one relay and #85 of the other, [if relays wired like the diagram I linked] then use a jumper wire to supply a ground pulse to #86 and #85, [one at a time] ground one end of the jumper wire to the cars chassis, [any ground point] then touch the other end to #86 and #85 one should lock the doors the other should unlock the doors, if not, you have miswired the relays or the door lock actuators to the relays.
If however the door locks lock and unlock when you use the jumper wire then you do not have the proper lead for unlock or the unlock output is not working.:think:94
