hey guys, i was wondering how all G2’s handle and drive without powersteering. Do all G2’s have god forsaken steering racks making the car difficult to turn at low speeds?
Im wondering because im thinking about pulling mine because it’ll save weight and help with the grease problem in my engine bay!
any input would be helpfull.
If the leak problem is caused by the power steering pump, those can be found for cheap at junkyards and only take 15 mins to swap out. If it’s your rack, do a search for swapping an EF manual rack and possibly a quaife quick ratio steering gear. There’s also the option of looping your lines to remove that pump.
Steering effort will depend mostly on how grippy your tires are, as well as road speed.
It’s not horrible…In my first da I took it off and looped the lines like the guy above was saying. It takes some getting used to and obviously tight parking can be a bitch but I liked having it off on mine.
You can rebuild your pump with relative ease and fix that leak. There are just a handful of rubber seals in that thing that you need to replace. I think all the seals cost $12 total.
I’ve been driving for a year without power steering on a gutted looped rack and i love it. The steering response you gain is worth the occasional slow speed muscle. I do plan on switching over to the hf/quafe kit one day but I think that a car as light as ours has no need for power steering.
my da has no power steering at all. all the lines have been removed from the rack. didn’t drive it yet so not sure how much effort i will have to put to turn to park. and not sure if its ok to be disconnected at the rack either. got it like that. ?? can anyone tell me if its ok to be like that. if you dont get what im talking about i will take a picture
here are the pictures of where mine is disconnected, i have no lines in the bay or anything at all. i just have one line left tho, under neath, can anyone tell me if this is ok or is it going to cause a problem?
i looped the thing on my transmission.but i still didn’t drive the car so not sure if its going to cause any problems like this,it would be helpful to know.thanks.
daily drove for 3 years with a looped and gutted steering rack. goes very well and parking isn’t a problem. sure it’s a little harder then if you have power steering obviously, but it’s not like most cars when there’s no more power steering belt and it’s impossible to turn. just loop the rack and take out the necessary valves and it’ll be perfect. i did the same to my track car and i love the feel.
