I wanted to extend my shifter up a few inches so it would be closer to my wheel. I saw a few companies that make extenders for around $40 and some cheap knock offs for a lot less than that, but I like to make my own stuff so I decided to give it a shot.
I stated out with this long 1/2in metal rod I got from lowes
I then marked out the length that I wanted it to be. (I chose 6 inches)
Next I used a dremel with a cutting wheel and cut the 6 inch piece off
I then used a grinding wheel to smooth it out and bevel the edges
The 1/2in rod is just big enough to make threads on the inside
I then put it in the drill press and used a file to grind enough off so that the 10x1.5 die would fit onto it
These are the main tools I used. The measuring thing…I can’t think of the name right now and the 10x1.5 tap and die
Then I used the die to cut the threads onto it for the shift knob
Fit on perfectly (It does thread all the way down, this was just to show it with the threads)
Next I started drilling the hole on the opposite side for the female threads. I started out by using a 1/8 drill bit then stepped up to 1/4, 5/16, 21/64, then the final size of 11/32. (I sprayed wd40 on it as I was doing this to keep the metal cool and to help the bit remove the shavings)
I then put the 10x1.5 tap in and started making the threads
