project shave

So I’m looking to shave my hatch spoiler and fix the lil rust. To beging with i bearly know anything about painting but i have read alot of diy bondo/painting threads and now im practising on a spare hatch from another car that was sitting around heres how i went with it.

First i took the elbem off and sanded the area and put the bondo over the holes.

the holes are gone, sanded down the bondo.

put some rattle can paint on it, bah i took one of the holes off by accident behind the hole…oh well. at this point , this is the second coat of paint, i wet sanded then painted.

now lets get that spoiler off

Ok now i know im missing alot of sanding steps and shit, i only used 2 differnet grits of sand, the first was like 1500 i think to get the paint off ,and the bondo, then some low grit like 300 or something to event out the first coat of paint. Leave me some tips and stuff I’m missing thanks

try this

Take your car somewhere to get it done. You are doing it completely wrong.

people dont have money to throw around like that bro. i did the ass end of my car and it looks pretty damn good set aside the fact shes primer black but its smooth as a babys @$$

it’s going to crack in a few months…there’s no metal in the back of where the hole is for the bondo to stick…so the edges are going to crack. take it the shop and get it welded for $10 and grind it down and slap a thin coat of body filler on it and you’re good to go…it’ll last forever.

Use fiberstrand, much stronger than bondo. Also your not even sealing/sanding right/painting right so its going to look like complete shit.

1500 grit sandpaper is way to fine. I’ve used Fibertech(kevlar and fiberglass mixture) and sanded that down using 180 grit to 240 on down to 320 grit, then using PPG Primer to fill in the light scratch’s and then wet sanding using 400 grit over that and then painting. Some of that rattle can primer is not good. I used to just buy rattle can primer and I think it was with alcohol or thinner, it wipes right off. not good…

I’m in no way an expert, but that’s what worked for me, and this was done 4 years ago and still looks good.

smokeintegra- the fibertech if i go to ome depot tahts what i ask for if not what do i ask for cause im bout to follow your directions and fill all my holes can you tell me what products i need to do it

Fibertech, I don’t think you can buy that stuff at home depot. on the other hand, you CAN get your sand paper there. I got my Fibertech from a local paint shop, and for the tube, it cost me abour $20. you will probably only need one tube. it does alot. and my PPG came from them there too. PPG primer is cheaper in price compared to Dupont, but I think it works just as good. it flexes with the body without cracking. you’ll have to get into your yellow pages and look for paint shops near you, and call them, to see what they have for you, or order it online.

here’s what you are looking for:
This is a good primer also. it’s called Transtar. never used it but the paint shop tells me it’s good, like they told me PPG was good too. I think this is cheaper than PPG.

Alright appreciate it 2 more qustions and then ill leave you alone lol…1.Can I use this on rust on my quarter panel …2.What sandpaper should I use before I apply and the fibert tech and and after and so forth?

on rust you want to sand it down until you don’t see the rust anymore. remember, rust is like cancer…you can cover it up now but you will see it worse later. so make sure you get rid of all that rust using anything from 120 grit to 180 grit, and so forth…something that will take it down to bare metal. you can then primer the bare metal and then you can apply the fibertech over the area and then go back to the 120 grit to 180 or rougher if need be. Fibertech is very tough, and may need rougher sand paper depending on how long you want to spend on that area. and then down to 280 and 320. Then primer the whole area and wet sand with 400 grit. now your ready for paint.

Weld the holes or don’t do it. Waste of time and money if not done right.

PPG is good. It’s what Honda used to paint your car. Factory paint & products!
