pulling fuel pump from junkyard

How quick could I pull a fuel pump from a car at a junkyard if I was’t concerned with the gas fill hoses and such? A local pull it yourself yard just got in a 1990 Teg and I am planning on sourcing my fuel pump there. How long will this take me to strip off? Of course I plan on paying for it, but I want to be prepared for the labor.

Thanks,
Shaun Ladd

It really depends on how easily you can jack the car up. If it’s got no wheels and you have no easy way to raise it, then you’re gonna have to spend a lot of time getting it jacked up. Once it’s up though, shouldn’t take more than half an hour or so if all goes well. I’d cut all the rubber hoses except the filler hose if possible, the filler hose is a custom prebent hose, and if you ever break yours (or break it while removing your fuel tank), it might be nice to have easy access to a spare. But you can still order them new from acura as well if need be. The filler hose looks kinda hard to get off, but I found it looked a lot harder than it really was, I just used some big pliers and pulled it off. Once you get the tank down, you just undo the bolts on the cap on top and pull the whole pump assembly, then just swap it with your old on. Oh, you do have to remove the back seat as well to get access at the plug for the pump to disconnect it to drop the tank, but removing the back seat doesn’t take too long. I’d leave yourself a good hour if you think you might run into problems, on top of whatever time it takes for you to jack the car up.

sweet,
that sounds easy enough. I really am not worried about that filler hose that is prebent cause any hose on a 10+ year old car is gonna be pretty much deteriorated anyways so if I have to replace mine, then no big deal. My car has been undrivable for 3 weeks so if I rip my hose dropping my tank, waiting another 3 days won’t hurt anything. Thanks for the info…

SUCCESS!!! thanks alot. That was pretty easy with only a Phillips screwdriver, 12mm wrench, 10mm socket/wrench, and a good box opener…I got a working pump and relay for $15 and 45 minutes of my time. I was going to get the taillights too but there was only one left.
