question about painting carbon fiber hood to make carbon fiber look different color

as most of you know, my DA was destroyed by mother nature (AGAIN!) back in early May. Well, I’m either rebuilding the teg, or buying a shell and building it. Regardless of which car gets built, it will be captiva blue pearl (favorite color).

Anyway, I want to paint my carbon fiber hood while I’m at it. But I don’t really want to color match it. I just want the carbon fiber to appear blue. Similar to what this guy did to his (only he did his purple)

I have always loved that look. Someone else asked him what kind of paint, and he just said the color. Didn’t help me much in my case, so I asked again. But I figured I’d ask my fellow paint/body gurus on G2IC.

A candy paint would give that effect. It goes on translucent and is used to give a secondary colour effect to a solid colour. Purple over blue, for instance.

Edit: He actually says he used House of Kolor Purple Kandy, which is indeed a candy paint. Cool idea!

okay, not buying anytime soon, but would this be enough to do my hood? and would this be what i need?

and if i’m correct, i would just mix this into a regular clearcoat at its recommended ratio? i’m a little lost on this. never worked with candy paints etc. only basic enamels etc.

You would mix with catalyst and reducer, not clear. The clear would go on afterwards.

yup, link fail. added :wink: would that be what i’d need, and would that be enough? doing literally just the hood.

i might end up doing a carbon hatch and doing this on a JDP OE2 lip

I’m not sure, as I’ve never sprayed it myself. That appears to be airbrush-specific, which may work differently than the typical automotive candy.

I think the manufacturer’s tech sheets would be the best source of information regarding mixing instructions, coverage, etc.
