quick compression check, how ?

hey wassup, wanted to check my cylinder compression, stupid haynes has alot of steps… one important one was disconnecting pfmi relay…sorry if i said it wrong, cant remember, mines like hiddeen, could find it, under dash, ne one that did comp. checks mind helping me out w/ steps

thanks

  1. Get a compression tester.
  2. Unplug all spark plug wires from spark plugs (make sure you know which is which).
  3. Remove all spark plugs.
  4. Disconnect air intake tube from the throttle body.
  5. Install compression tester in Cylinder 1.
  6. Crank engine and watch the compression tester.
  7. Repeat steps 5-6 for the rest of the cylinders.
  8. Install everything back.

184psi. correlates to 9.2:1 Compression ratio. If you get other readings, try this generic equation: CR = PSI / 20. Where CR is Compression Ratio, and PSI is Pounds per Square Inch that you read off the compression tester.

Regards,

Oz

EDIT: Re-wrote the steps. Best to remove all spark plugs.

hey i appreciate your reply, i have a few questions, so no fuel needs to be cut off?

i was told before that you should take out one plug at a time?

i will try it that way though.

u dont have to disconnect air intake tube. butu sure should cut the fuel because u could start a fire or exposion because the gas will shoot out of the cyl.

lol:rofl:

You should pull the fuel pump fuse. It’s ot a good idea to have fuel in the cylinders while doing the compression test. By the time you get to the last cylinder there could be a significant amount of fuel setting in the cylinder. This isn’t good for the compression tester, and it could cause different readings on the meter.
