Quick Pushbutton Start Question

Hey all,

I don’t feel like dealing with why my starter doesn’t engage sometimes, so let’s get to the meat of the question.

I’m making an interior pushbutton switch to start the car. I’m using a small pushbutton switch and a 4-pin relay. I intend to have the pushbutton switch connected to ground (so i’m not bringing current inside the cabin). I’m not quite sure which pins on the relay go where.

All I want is to know which pins are connected to which components in order for me to have a pushbutton switch that activates the GROUND to start the car.

I’m assuming that each pin will need to be hooked up to:
87 - Batt (+)
30 - Starter Solenoid
85 - 12v Source
86 - Switched Ground

Is this correct?

Thanks.

Yes that is correct, however if your car is a standard there is already a “starter” relay and it already has “current inside the cabin”.

Why exactly are you installing a push button start? 94

Im installing it because most of the time my car doesn’t star with the key. Nothing happens except a ‘click,’ so I have to jump it at the solenoid under the hood. I’d rather not have the switch controlling 12v. More comfortable with the ground.

If you can hear a “click” but engine does not turn over and the click is inside the car, [not starter solenoid in engine bay] then you will need to replace the starter relay, [contacts are burnt] or wire your relay after the starter relay.

If the “click” is from the engine bay, [starter solenoid] then switching to a push button start will not help, you will need to replace the starter solenoid. 94
