Quick question regarding bondo and the right primer???

Questions

  1. It says on the back of the can to use bondo’s brand of primer…Do I have to or are they just trying to sell more product?
  2. If not, any suggestions on a good primer that will help prevent rust and help with me painting the car black?

Thanks for your time and any questions answered!!

Oh and before the 16 responses telling me to search…I did. But everyone just says primer it…not what kind or type…thanks again!

Hey man-
I just got done painting my car and have first hand experience with all of this stuff. To answer question one, no you do not have to use Bondo brand primer, as you said they are just using it as a marketing tool. Secondly, as far as what type of primer to use, I used Featherfill G2 primer, from a company called Evercoat. This stuff is great! You can get it in black or grey(use black if you are painting your car black). I paid $50 for a gallon of it. The best thing for you to do is to go buy your local automotive paint store. Not a body/paint shop, a store which sells all products for the do-it-yourselfer body man. They will tell you what to use, and will probably only carry a certain brand of most items(mine carries Evercoats products for body work and that, and carry PPG paint.). These are not spray can primers though. You will need a spray gun to apply them.
GOOD LUCK!
Kyle

kyle, you know how to paint?

sg7300 = Thanks man!! Yes I just bought a new spray gun and compressor so that will be badass…I will look into evercoat. Was that gallon plenty to do the whole car nicely??

Once again thanks for your time!!

how much do spray guns run for? i’m getting a 30 gallon air compressor, is that cool?

The compressor you have is fine. This is not to pricey either…
Hope I helped.spray gun

we had one of those guns at the oil company I worked at - sucked, was next to impossible to get a smooth spray out of it. the HVLP gun with remote tank was much better.

I have not had any of those issue’s yet…maybe it will when it gets old. I did some testing on some old 54 ford fenders and it turned out super smooth!!
I love that thing~!!

I prefer the Gravity Feed Gun

You waste less paint/primer/clear and it’s an easier clean up. I used the siphon feed the first time around with decent results, then switched to the gravity feed. It’s a little bit more expensive but worth it since less materials are wasted.
