R1 coilovers

okay. I just bought a pair of R1 coilovers. I went to the shop to get my old springs off and the guy at the shop said that these coilovers suck. He said that the sleves and the lower perches will seize because one is aluminum and the other is steel. He also said that you have the chance of breaking the sleeves because you put a lot of stress on them because the springs are half the size of the regular lowering springs. So i decided not to put them on my car. I went with the supension technique lowering springs. 2.0 f 1.8 r. what do you guys say about these the R1 coilovers. Is this true about all coilovers. except for the Complete sets.

Did you buy them from www.speedpeople.com? I bought some also and have not put them on my car yet. I don’t have the cash to trash them and buy more, so when I get them on I will let you know how they are. Hopefully the shop guy felt that way about most coilovers.

I bought some generic coilovers a while ago (I don’t think they were the R1’s, but probably similar), and the perches were aluminum as were the threaded bodies, so there wouldn’t really be much chance for them to seize due to dissimilar metal (not usually much of a problem on cars though anyway) problems, but corrosion might be, I dunno, although I tend to doubt it. The shorter springs I think will tend to be a bit bouncier due to less travel in the spring, and at least with mine, they were waaaay to stiff for my stock shocks (450f, 350r). The sleeves for the coilovers were also too small for the metal dust covers to slide into, so mine compressed and the dust covers either crushed/bent or stuck in the coilover sleeve. The other thing that bothered me with the coilovers was the fact that the sleeves were held in place by 3 set screws, which didn’t seem like a very good idea for holding them since the set screws dig into the shock body. I only rode on mine for about a day and decided they were just too crappy, so I forked out the dough for some koni yellows and H&R sports, and am waaaaay happier. I’d try the coilovers before junking them if you feel safe enough doing so, you might like them, but be careful installing them if they have the set screws, and also be careful about the metal dust covers (maybe cut them down or make some thinner ones or something). I dunno if these problems are true with all cheap coilovers (although I tend to think so), but I think ground controls and skunk2s would be ok, even though they aren’t full coilovers, since both companies have pretty good reputations and they cost more which suggests more effort went into designing and making them.

Yah i didn’t put them on, but i still have them. Let me know how they are. Maybe if they are okay for u i may put them on my car.

I will let you know how they are when I get them on. Should be about a week.
