i’m in need of help on how to remove the rack n pinion, i dont know if you take out the engine or how you do any of it… please help and threads would be nice also
The OEM manual says to removed the outer tie rods from the HUB.
Then disconnect all the lines going to it.
Remove the brackets tat hold it down.
Then remove one sides outer tie rod in order to clear the subframe.
Make sense??
I did it on a 4ws Prelude and tat was the easist way to do it.
Once I get home I can post pics of the info for ya if tat helps
do you have to drop the subframe?
It isnt too bad. Most of the bolts are 10mm or 14mm, there might be a 17mm in there. Next time do a search!! Search for “bitch pin removal,” it helped out a lot.
-jack up of the car of course
-disconnect the battery
-turn the wheel all the way to the right until it stops (by doing this it allows you to remove the rack with removing one of the outer tie rods)
-remove the protective plate for the powersteering lines (if you have powersteering)
-disconnect all of the powersteering lines from the rack (if you have powersteering) *make sure you have an oil pan to catch the fluid that comes out.
-disconnect the shift linkage
-remove the little “mid” pipe between the header and the rear exhaust. *It almost looks like a cat delete pipe
-there is a sub-frame bracket that runs from the front to the firewall, you need to remove that
-remove the outer tie rod ends from the spindle
-you then need to go inside the car under the dash to access the steering column. Take the cover off and remove the “U” joint bolt that connects the steering column to the rack.
-under the car remove the powersteering bracket that holds the rack to the frame (it is on the passenger side.)
-after all of that you should be able to remove the rack. It helps to have a buddy with you.
*keep in mind when you remove the rack there is a rubber grommet that goes between the rack and the firewall. Dont lose it!
-when installing the new rack you will need someone to help line up the rack with the “U” joint that connects the rack to the steering column. It is kind of a bitch.
-install everything in reverse order.
*if you have powersteering, refill the fluid reservoir and you need to bleed the air out of the system. To do this turn the car on and turn the steering wheel lock to lock continuously. It helps to have a buddy keep an eye on the reservoir to see if any bubbles come up.
I hope this helps. If I missed something, hopefully someone will chime in.
im deleting power steering, how do you loop the lines? everyone has told me something different
I used an EF rack. If you do a search there are a lot of people that have done different things. There is actually a huge write up on it==>http://forums.g2ic.com/showthread.php?88673-The-New-P-S-Removal-Thread-(56K-warning)&highlight=removing+powersteering
Thats cause theres multiple ways to do it. I also hear so many different way, but in the end they all really do the same thing. I agree on the manual rack. this is the best way to do it IMO…
EF Rack also shaves some weight off our heavy beasts.
