Radio shuts off when hitting the power window controls...

Hello,

I know that the accessories are controlled/regulated by one component in the interior...but I don't know what that component is called. I've seen it mentioned around and I would like to replace it as it seems to be faulty in my vehicle.

Situation

 1. Whenever I go less than 50 mph and go over a rough bump, the radio cuts out as if a breaker was tripped. However, the car functions as normal and using the power window controls do not cause the radio to shut off.

 2. Whenever I accelerate past 50 MPH and maintain that speed, the car/radio is even more sensitive to bumps and shutting off. At this speed, the radio will also shut off if either of the power window controls are used.

History

 1. The harness to the radio has been cut/hacked prior to my owning the vehicle. The prior owner had bare wires lying around in the deleted radio area. I added connectors to the ends of the wires in preparation of an aftermarket radio installation. I installed the aftermarket radio head-unit and everything worked fine for about 2 months. Then the “shutting off” issue started. I individually wrapped all of the connectors for each power and speaker line in electrical tape when I did the install. I wanted to ensure that there would be no “ground-out” issues.

 2. After installing the radio, I noticed that the passenger door speaker does not work…or is not installed. I have yet to take apart the door to find out if the speaker is blown or if it is just bare wires lying around inside of there. If there are bare wires, would this cause the radio to shut off/ground out?

If anyone has any information on the component that needs to be replaced I would greatly appreciate it.

@ MOD: Thank you for the proper thread placement.

I found this information in another thread…
You did check the constant power fuse, right?

Fuse 14 - 15A. [hot at all times] in under dash fuse box.:whisper:94

Not necessarily, it will be the same circuit as the radios acc., and it’s not a short, a short would blow a fuse, the circuit is “opening”, it could be as simple as a loose fuse.
Try this, start the car, radio on, then find fuse 22, [10A] in the under dash fuse box, put a finger on it and wiggle it a bit, [does radio cut out] see if it is loose at all, remove it and make sure both “legs” fit tightly into the fuse box.

While your at the fuse box, check the main acc fuse, upper right hand side and under a plastic tab, make sure both screws holding the fuse in are tight.:stare: 94

The other possible problem is a defective fuse, [not a blown fuse, just defective].
If the HU itself cuts out, all lights and display turn off just like if you turn the unit off, it is a power supply problem, a poor connection on a power lead or fuse holder or the fuse itself, replace the fuses with a new one, a common problem with “blade” fuses is the fuse filament can break at the “leg”, still maintain contact until more current is drawn through it, [turning up the volume or a lot of bass].

Check all the above and let us know.:corn:94
I am going to check this “Main Accessory Fuse” located on the upper right side of the under-dash fuse box in the drivers side footwell, and also “Fuse 14 -15a” I don’t think that this is the component referenced in the other thread that I saw regarding the radio shutting off…but its a start until a wiser person responds.

Well, for anyone reading this…

I checked the fuses and the #22 fuse had a 15a fuse in it instead of a 10a fuse.
I threw out the 15a fuse in there and replaced it with a fresh 10a fuse. I will take the car on the highway at lunch to see if it cuts out still.

Thanks to this website for being a great resource of information.

sounds like a grounding issue or just a wiring connection

I think you are right.
After replacing that fuse with the right amperage one…the radio still cuts out.
There has to be a wire loose somewhere.
