Random battery drain + dead stereo help!

Randomly, about once a month, my battery gets drained while the car is parked (for about 24 hrs). Nothing is left on, but battery gets too dead to crank. When this happens, and I jump it, the stereo is dead, will not turn on. This is ratified when I remove the positive battery terminal connector and put it back.

What is puzzling me is the randomness of of it all. The car can be left for a week and it’s fine, but randomly, when left for only 24 it is dead!

Any thoughts? Battery is about 3 years old

I’m not one for electric, but this sounds like the alternator. The alternator has this thing? that prevents current back flow. Sometime they can let the current flow backwards draining the battery. It can also be the weather playing the factor on the battery its self.

Possibly… luckily I have a spare alternator to try…any other thoughts?

what i’ve done is used a dvom. disconnect the positive from the battery and touch the dvom wires to the positive on the battery and the other to the positive cable. check the amps, and pretty much if it’s high then you defenitly have a drain. i would start pulling fuses and see if it drops. if it does then thats the route id take .

aka a parasitic draw test

The problem with a parasitic drain test is the drain has to be there when testing.

I agree that it is most likely the alt., [voltage regulator to be specific], swap out the alt and see what happens. 94

Exactly my problem FCM! When I do the test, everything is fine because the drain isn’t there (because it’s random)… When I swap my new tranny in I’ll switch alternators as well! Thanks for the help g2ic!

you could hook a voltmeter up so when you drive you see if the alternator is charging. i would hate to change an alternator if it wasnt the issue.

ive been dealing with the fan coming on after the car is off. it sometimes isnt running when i walk off but it comes on later. other days nothing. im sure youve read of this issue. relay, fan control timer unit, or oil sensor i think. post what you find

That “thing” is called a diode…
