Rattling coming from Rear Exterior Panel

Has anyone had any problems with rattling coming from the cars rear exterior panel??
Ill be trying to bump it in my car , cause like anyone else I like to show off, but this panel that’s in between the bumper and the taillights rattles like crazy, especially when the bass hits hard and I cant stand it. I mean who likes to have a nice car that rattles a lot every time you try to crank the music. I’m pretty much open to any suggestions you guys might have on ways of fixing this rattling……any suggestions!

Was Looking into some different types of damping accesories that would fix this problem and was wondering which do you guys think would work best:

  1. Dynamic Control Trunk Kit or
  2. Rockford Fosgate Noise Blocker(Damping Spray)

    Kind of on a budget

any suggestions??

ok integ21, this is what ya do… if you are talking about the same panel i had a problem with then you mean the metal one under the trunk lid and over the bumper between the tail lights as you stated… well this is what i did and it has been rattle free ever since.( i know this works cause i have 4 JL 12 w6’s in mineand i did this 4 yrs ago)… now it is a bit of a pain in the butt. and to be able to access the wires for bulb changes and such after you do this, you will have to spend hours preping. but i will explain that later on…so here we go…

step 1: go out to any hardware store like home depot and grab a can or two (took me 1 1/2 cans) of spray foam insulator… usually found in the home insulation section of the store. ask a sales clerk he’ll know what you mean.

step 2: pull the interior panels off from the trunk (like you were gonna change the bulbs in your tail lights)and make sure u take the system out too.( makes the job easier if u can sit in the trunk and see what the heck you are spraying) then do something that i didn’t do and wish that i did…that is find some thin plastic tubes that are larger in diameter than the wire bundles going to all your bulbs. split the tubes lengthwise with a razorblade after cutting them to the length of the wire bundle and wrap them around the wires. tape the ends with a good sealing tape like electical or something…duct tape is too sticky and masking tape will peel away when the foam puts pressure on it…make sure u tape off the connectors themselves good too. you’ll see why later(u can find these also at home depot but make sure they are thin and flexable).

step 3: now put the panels back on so the area is sealed again…

step 4: now grow some gonads and start filling that whole area with the foam. there should be a little attachment tube that came with the cans of foam to slip in between the panels to inject the foam with. now this stuff expands rapidly and i mean EXPANDS!! so be careful and just squirt a little blast at a time. if it starts to pop out from the bottom of the panel and onto the floor STOP…u have injected enough…stop if it comes out any area for that matter…you’ll know cause the stuff is yellow… now if it does come out don’t panic, it is easily removed after it dries but don’t try to mop it up wet ok? repeat this process over and over untill u have move from panel to panel and injuected the whole A** end of the car…remember though that the foam expands and sqeezes into the tiny spaces wherever it finds them… so look around real good before starting and tape off any holes u don’t want to be filled.

step 5: let it dry. it doesn’t take all that long but wait about 2 hours more than the can says just to be sure or you’ll get yellow S**T everywhere.

step 6: THE FUN PART!! now that it is dry you get to clean and cut all the places that the foam splirted out that you didn’t want it to. so start by pulling off the access panels for the tail lights and cutting away the foam till u can find those tubes u installed. then remove them…this might be a pain in the butt to do, but it’ll be worth it when u need to change a bulb. see i didn’t do the tube step and found out that i had to cut away a crapload of foam from the connectors just to get them out. so you’ll see that after u get the tubes out you have room to move the wires around and get the connectors off… now if some of the foam leaked out tward the floor the best way to trim it to make it look nice and clean is to accually pull ALL the trim from the rear of the trunk and trim the foam with a razorblade about an 1 1/2 inches above the edge of the trim…and it looks kinda cool to see where all the foam went. you’ll see that it is not that bad after it is dry to remove it…just cut and pull it comes right out. it is also easier to get the tubes out from the wires when u can see the whole wall of foam u just put in there…

now i know that this sound like a lot of work and mess but if you are carful when injecting the foam, take the time to prep the job well, and wait for it to dry before you try to clean up any mistakes, you’ll see that when u are done, noone will see it and you will have the tightest, cleanest, hardest hitting car around!
this foam works so well for two reasons…one it puts a little pressure on that rattling panel… and two you now have a massive wall of foam between your subs and that metal panel to absorb all the sound waves that are causing the rattle in the first place.(kinda like a sound proof room)

cost= about $18 for the foam, your trouble, well that’s priceless!

well i hope this helps you. and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me…i check it everyday!

Thanks alot for the Info kc10er, hopefully this weekend i have time to try that and i will keep you posted on how the outcome was.

no prob, just take your time;)

Well I went ahead and foamed out the space between that metal panel and the main frame of the car (on the exterior), that seem to have worked out fine it took out some of the rattling, but i now have a new sound coming from within inside the car, it sounds like the plastic panels around the trunk are now muffling…

i have yet to decide wether or not to actually foam out those plastic panels as stated in your post kc10er. Im alittle skeptical

If i just put the foam on the plastic panels while there off and then put them back on before the foam sets, would that work as well (just like you would when you paste two things together)??

well here’s what else you can try…grab some foam, just the grey loose stuff ya know as in boxes or padding for delicate machines and such…you should be able to find this also at a hardware store… and stuff that back behind the plastic pieces of the inner trunk. as far as gluing them to the removeable access panels, i am not thinking that it’ll stop the buzzing or rattle that u have if it is indeed comming from those plastic panels themselves…another way to stop them from making noise would be to some rubber trim, U shaped as u look at it from the end, for say putting over the edges of glass or such…i think ya know what i mean. get the right thickness and push that onto the edges of the panels and re"click" them back in place. (if it’ll sqeeze) back on there… i never had a prob with those…now if u say u here it inside the car…take a look at the third brakelight that is on the rear window…now that thing rattles like all hell… what i did was to remove it and then get som thick household door trime insulation(a black strip of foam with glue on the back) ant trim the edges that touch the glass. then reinstall, it is easy to get off… also watch out for the map light trim…it rattles the map lights pretty good… to fix that . same thing…the trick on the map light is to get enough pressure pushing down… if it rattles pull on the edge and you will know what i mean… oh and i almost forgot the worst rattle… the plastic trim that goes all around the rear window right down by the trunk lid…BIG rattles there… so as with the third brakelight, trim all the parts that touch the glass with the foam strips… now don’t worry about people seeing that one… the black trim on the glass itself will hide that one… as for the brakelight…make it pretty…people will see it when u look in the rear window, unless u are tinted. so i hope that helps a bit and if ya find anymore let me know i am a rattle finding fool… oh and i am glad that where u injected the sprayfoam worked… i never thought about that one…nice thinking… and i am curious…how much splirted out? and was it a pain to make it so noone sees it from an angle?? well have fun foaming this week…

Well as for foaming out that exterior panel, didn’t have any troubles with it. You pretty much just have to pick spots where your gonna apply the foam and find areas where you can put the straw of the applicator in. I didn’t even have to completely foam out that panel, I just picked spotted it. Other than that there was no overfill, and it worked out just fine.

Plus nobody can tell I foamed out that panel

sweet… so have ya done any other trim work yet?? have u located the rattles from inside… let me know if my adviced worked on the interior for ya…

Well I havent done anything just yet, but hopefully this weekend I can do some more…

Oh yeah, I ve found out some more rattling, heres a list of areas:
coming from possibly the 3rd brake light, the passenger sun visor, since i have my woofers facing up in the rear that fabricated board thats comes off and on also seem to rattle a bit, my door panels also seem to be rattlling, and that trunk board that runs under the carpet also seems to rattle.
damn its sounds like my whole car seem to be falling apart. Its funny how it didnt start making all the rattles until i put in my system in, but damn i love that bass

Heres a glimpse of what my car looks like (not current pics):

it now has a 2" drop with a mesh grill

ok… well i told ya how to fix the third brakelight, as for the pass sun visor… a thin wrap of electrical tape around the post that clips into the clamp to hold it from swiveling might do it… or it may be the cover to the mirror, as for the floor of the trunk, sticky foam lining all the way around the edge should do it. and for the removeable cover for the trunk deck…all i did was wrap the posts that clip it into the car with electrical tape untill it was hard to get the sliders over the posts…took care of that. well hope that helps ya a bit…sorry so long to reply i was outta town…

Hey man dont sweat it, you’ved helped me a lot on my quest of ridding my car of rattling, as for the info, thanks a lot it helped…
 “We’re not werthy, we’re not werthy”

 i’m all teary eyed… but seriously… anything for a teg racer!

On the topic of rattles my sun roof viberates really badly, manly when the sun sheld is open. I can hear the sun roof rattling against the metal wind sheld thingy, the chrome thing the pops up with the roof open. Does anyone have this problem??

to take care of the rattle in your sunroof…is easy, just get some thin strips of foam with adheasive on the back and stick to the metal where it contacts the sliding glass…boom prob solved…i have had this prob and did just that… no more rattles and it still seals great.since that metal has nothing to do with the seal. good luck.
