What materials would i need to repaint body parts like a hood and fenders? A friend of mine who teaches highschool auto collision says to use aircraft stripper paint. Because the heat of the sanding process can warp the steel.
your friend teacher is an idiot. That only happens when u wanna remove all paintby using really really course sand paper. But if ur just repainting, just prep is normally and paint it.
If you are repainting the same color and you don’t need bodywork done all you should need to prep it it is scuff stuff (a degreaser, cleaner and scuffing agent) and a scotchbrite pad and a bucket of water. You could use the aircraft stripper if you want to take it down to bare metal. Then you will have to clean everything off then primer it, then wetsand it then paint. Alot of extra steps. And i have never ever seen anyone warp metal from sanding.
get 180 grit 320 grit and 800grit and start by wet sanding with 180 then let dry do bondo if u have dents and dings then hit the bondo spots with 180 wet then go over the whole thing with 320 then if u have any bare metal spots prime it then sand with 320 repeat 3 times but only do it to prime spots then hit the whole thing with 800 and then get green brillo pads was it with dish soap and the brillo pads then its ready to paint. this is the way to go i have done about 3 cars now and it worked out good but good luck with it .
tegfan your in GB! I already told you i could help you out w/ this & even sent you pics of my old project car. Anyways if you are over 18 you can get aircraft paint stripper from Wal-Mart…but if you use it WEAR GLOVES! like thick rubber gloves because I used aircraft stripper to help strip the paint off my stealies, since they were painted bad & it started to rust…i used painting gloves(thin like doctors wear) & the shit burned right through the gloves & burned my hand on several occasions…also use something like a paintbrush to paint it on to further more protect yourself from getting burnt.
yes you can warp metal(dent it in/make fish eyes) from pushing your sander into the body part too hard, or one spot for too long, i did this myself on my trunk
Also as a 3rd part of advice don’t use paintstripper on your body parts…its such a pain in the ass…also NEVER buy the air craft stripper in the areosol can it sucks :jerkoff: …aircraft stripper will take the paint off anything if you mess it up & don’t take the body parts off your car that you want to repaint…so basically you shouldn’t use it…
if you want to repaint your hood & fenders go w/ a more coarse sand paper like 180, & move up as you go along. also do not sand in only one motion or sand in one spot for too long or too hard. NEVER SAND DIRECTLY ON AN EDGE! this will indefinitley go through the clearcoat & paint(i did this on my trunk & got to bare metal) just sand up to the edge. never also tip the sander on its edge & sand…but anyways like i said if you want some help I can stop by or you can just contact me & ask me something…
BTW. sandable primer is nasty for wetsanding & if you use a block sander by hand(instead of a powertool) it will take forever…may even be more inconsistent…it will also screw around with your hands pretty bad…
don’t repaint your saide moldings or the moldings on your bumper(the black plastic looking pieces that line your car) because these are used to help stop getting dings/dents from small accidents & people opening their door into your car, carts running into your car, etc etc etc… & if you paint these, then it will chip! my friend had his painted w/ his whole car & its starting to chip where people had opened their door into his fenders & other crap…if you want to get the scratches out, then just sand & clearcoat
also before you paint after you are done sanding use a fine scotch brite pad & use some dish washing soap(degreaser) & wash the part you are about to paint, this will get dirt & greese off your car for a smoother look & better bond. also use a microfiber polishing cloth to wipe your car part after you washed it with the degreaser, because it is lint free
it makes me feel good to give out painting/bodywork info/help because a year or so ago when i first started learning it i didn’t get much help & it was such b!tch…basically trial & error which can be costly
yeah you can paint over the bumper itself…you just may want to take it apart(take off the styrofoam, bumper support, & piece in the center/top of the bumper where screws are holding it in) just make sure you tape off the moldings…BTW you’ll probably have to hand sand the bumper since all the curves & hard to reach places…once again protect your hands by using gloves when you sand manually(w.o an electric sander) otherwise your hands will blister/calik up…& the bumper is probably the hardest part to paint due to the prep for it
it all depends how good you want it to look & how bad it was in the first place…my trunk was in perfect condition, no scratches, dings, or rust…just i bondoed & used fiberglass over the antenna hole & spoiler holes. i first used 180grit, probably 8 sheets of it, then went to 320, then 400, primer coat 3x, 800 grit, primer coats 2x, then wet sand 1000 grit…its pretty smooth now, but you can really tell where i fucked up sanding 1 of the holes, because it looks like a bump of dry glue on the trunk that was sprayed over w/ primer…
so if you use a fine sand right away your going to use more sheets…& also it won’t get as much residue or get as deep into the clear coat/paint as a corser grit…& if you only use a few different grit sheets once its done you will be able to tell…since a bumper gets a lot of dmg i would go the way i went w/ my trunk…although i shouldnt have, but thats how a hood, & front bumper should be done due to the damage to them from driving…im still waiting 4 the invite to see the project tegfan >.<
so far i have different colored body parts that i want to get painted black so thats why im here. To prep the rear bumper and fenders i have. As for the body rust and rust outs, i may take that to a body shop.
yeah, i got a friend who works at a paint shop & paints cars for cheap for me…so im going to have him prep & paint my car, since it will cost me more through trial and error just to get the car prepped to primer…i think i may get it painted earlier spring for $800 for nighthawk black, but i really want cinnamon pearl but my GF doesn’t want it that color & she is backing me finacially a bit…
but wow…thats looks like a lot of surface rust, but i can be wrong since were in wisconsin…you should see the pics i got off the rust on my car…i bought my teg for way too much & i was sanding some bubbles in my wheel well…found out the fucking retards didnt treat the rust & its really bad…they just bondoed over the rust & painted >.< so now its going to cost me a lot more than $800 to get my car painted more like $1,500 but that includes dings, dents, & rust taken out/cured & all my doors shaved + my trunk shaved
but anyways we should meet up sometime & take a look at your teg…looks like you live on the outskirts of GB…like howard or new franken
