Hey guys I need to know the best way to break loose the bolts holding the rear bumper support to the frame. The support and the bolts are all rusted to shit and looks like it might be near impossible to unbolt. Dont want to snap a head off or anything.
PB Blaster, or WD40 etc… multiple times and let it soak in… then give it hell.
Looks like the 2 nuts on the lower bolts are so corroded once I put the socket on them they will disintegrate to dust.
Snapping them off and replacing the bolts/support might be your best bet,if there that bad.
yeah i just took another look at it and the rear bumper support has rusted into dust. Might just cut those nuts off with a grinder if they wont spin. From what it looks like in the manual, the bolts do not thread thru the body, they just thread thru the nuts. Can anyone verify this before I get the grinder out?
Yes… the studs just slide through the body… the cap-nuts are the only thing that secure them to the body.
I am doing a lot of reading on this I guess this is pretty common rust issue. when it rains all the water is kicked up into the bumper and also leaks down from bad tail light seals. I think when I install a new rear bumper beam I am going to seal it in something. Any Ideas?
I would not seal anything up… you really want to have air move though the bumper support to let it dry out. If you are going to use the same bumper, I would have it media blasted and prime and re-paint with good chassis paint. I just recently did mine on my db2. My car is not a daily driver, and is garage kept, and you can see by the below photos that there was still some suffice rust starting. The other photo is the bumper that has been repainted. I sprayed all nuts and bolts with wd40 and sit over night be for removing. Hope this helped and good luck!
Yeah I was just wondering if there was something better than spray paint to coat the rear bumper support with. Considering how our cars kick water up in there i am surprised people’s bumpers have not started falling off. Mine has so much corrosion it needs replaced.
