Anyone know how to take off the reear bumper and it is illegal to not have one and just put the license plate somewhere else?
Well… I drove around w/ no rear bumper for awhile… (left the bumper core on) and had my plate on my rear windshield… I can’t exactly remember how I took it off… But i remember that the metal above the bumper, and below the hatch… that one section… has to come off… and that comes off by taking off some nuts on the inside of the trunk… Remove that… and that will give you access to all the screws to take off the bumper cover… Most likely you will have to use a pair of vice grips to remove every single one of the screws… because usually the have rotted somewhat, and strip easily… and are stupid. So… You’ll probably want to buy some new ones.
Thanks, i have seen those two screws and tried… but wasn’t sure what to do.

that one section… to take it off is it the two big gold bolts at the bottom corners of the trunk, or are they located somewhre else. Also, how am I suppose to get tht piece off after the bolts come off w/out damaging anything. That’s the last thing I have to do.
Thanks
No… that middle section of metal comes off… by like… 4 nuts… on the inside of the trunk. Not the 2 huge ones on either side… And when you take off those nuts, it will just slide right out. I think (maybe) 2 of the bolts for the metal section are under the tail lights? I forget. Search for about 4 bolts, i think all 10mm… before hassling with the tail lights though. I know you have to remove the trunk liner (black plastic, just the one main section) to get to the bolts though… unbolt those and then it should pop out. Just pull it straight back.

I have no liner so everything i can see. Are those 4 bolts towards the middle of the car and above or under, or left or right of the tail lights. Thanks
I didnt need to take off the centre peice between the bumper and hatch.
2 bolts either side of the boot, real low down, as well as 2 bolts underneath the car
easy done
If you need to remove the centerpiece, you will need to remove eight nuts. Four are in te trunk behind the liner, and there’s two behind each taillight. The taillight nut size is 8mm and the ones for the center piece are 10mm. You will need to scrape of some gasket material that they use on the nuts, but that can be done with a flathead screwdriver. Also, they are hard to get out so if you are using a rachet try to use a 6pt. socket. Lates

I see that you would have to remove that center peice cuz the bumper cover is clipped on by two bolts under that thing… i jsut need to remove to get it off, other wise try and rip the bumper cover out.
hey im chanign my bumper today to the 92-93 (i had a 90-91)
well neway i had some problems
i took the black panels outat teh trunk and saw the 2 nuts on each side (4 total) that u have to take off. well first off they all would turn (like get loose) but the wouldnt come off the screw…they just cept turning…and then one broke completely is there neway to get tehm off sicne they jsut keep turning but wouldn unscrew
also i read someone took it off by just taking 2 bolts off from inside the trunk (where are they??) and 2 under the car …
is that possable…would it work if i did it that way?
thanks alot
mike
Ook here we go guys: Start in the trunk…remove the back plastic panel (2 metal screw holding up the panel on each side of it, 3 plastic retaining screw on the bottom, and clips along the top) easiest way to remove is just to clear your trunk. Once you remove that panel, you will see 2 goldish nuts on each side, loosen those. Looking underneath the car, directly in line with the nuts in the trunk, will be two more nuts, one on each side. Remove those. Now there are 2 screws on each side of the car by the tire, just look and you’ll see them. remove those, lastly, remove the 2 nuts in the trunk and pull the bumper straight out towards you. Good luck…email me if you need more help.
just FYI…the 4 nuts you will remove are all 12 mm…

hmm, I took mine off without taking that panel off, i’m not sure if the USDM bumper support is different, maybe Honda assumed you guys will have more accidents or something.
just look in the helms, 4 bolts and 4 screws aabove the mudflaps
Are you in CA? Your profile says UCI, so if you’re still in that area (or anywhere in CA), you could get a fix-it ticket for having no rear bumper.
CHP Vehicle Code states (yeah, I picked up a copy at my friendly local CHP office - it’s actually got some interesting stuff - did you know that cars manufactured before January 1, 1979 can have yellow brake lights?) that all vehicles subject to registration have to have a front and rear bumper, unless you’re in a small exempt group which includes tracktors and motorcycles.
This also explains why the front of the Chrysler Prowler looks absolutely retarded - the vehicle is required to have a front bumper, so they had to put it in front of what would otherwise be a pretty slick looking roadster. Er, http://www.chrysler.com/prowler/img/home_lg.jpg for reference.
Anways - yes, front and rear bumpers required by CHP regulations. And although you could probably get away with not having one for a short amount of time, I wouldn’t want to risk the hassle of a fix-it ticket.
Oh yeah, not to mention they’re there for a reason
