Hi guys/gals, its been a good while since I’ve been on these. Last time I was on was like 2 years ago or so. I’m mainly a Prelude guy and spen most my time on Prelud powe.com. I own a 1991 Prelude si. I’ve been into that scene. But gettin tired of it being my DD, and want to get my DB back on the road again. The old motor on it blew a head gasket due to the cylinder walls on the outside part cracking. Thus leaking coolant into the cylinder.
Now I’ve sourced another bottom end in good conditions except for 2 spun bearings. I plan to use the new bottom end and use the old crank and pistons of my old motor.
Now i’m clueless on where to start. I have taken everything apart.
Like i said i want to use the old internals on the new block I acquired.
I know i need to get new main and rod bearings, rings, head gasket, and other parts.
My questions are how much can i deck of the head and the block. Could i re use my old rods and pistons?
And any other recomendations too!!!
I just dont know where to start. I can post pics of the parts i have too if it helps. I hope this thread makes sense. LOL
Most people on here aren’t going to give you a step-by-step guide to rebuilding your engine but there is a lot of info already out there. I’d read through that Teg Tip and also read through the entire procedure in a good repair manual.
Took head to get resurfaced and new valve seals in it
Crank is gettin micro polish
Block is get deck and honed plus acid dipped
My concern at the moment are the following:
What size bearing should i use. I’m using the crank from my old motor into the new bottom end i got. So kinda clueless of the bearing to get or wat size.
The other is can i re use my pistons and rods?
Also what kind of rings should i get. Like size wise.
When using different used components from different engines its almost impossible to just throw out an answer at what size bearings you will need. you may just need to measure your crank and rods and order bearings accordingly. Its not really difficult if you have access too, and know how to read bore mic’s and a good set of calipers. If not just dump it at a machine shop and have them size everything. If your sure the block hasnt been bored before than you should be able to use a stock ring set with no problems.

TOmorrow I’ll call up the machine shop guys. … so then can measure up things for me!!
Is there any intechangeable stock rods that are stronger than the b18 ones?
Reason i ask if because on a Preludes B20a5 you can use H23 rods and those last and are stronger for Boost applications!
Ok did a little calculation so figuere out the right main bearings size.
I dont have the colors codes with me at the moment.
But since I’m using one crank from one bad motor onto a good bottom end I came out with some odd color codes. If I believe I had 2 greens, 1 pink, 1 brown, cant remember the others but they were all differents colors. I got those colors by reading and following the numbers and letters that were stamp on the crank and the block that I’m using.
But when I do the same with the crank that came with the new bottom end, I get 2 pinks 1 brown and 2 greens.
Hope ya’ll understand what I’m trying to say here. That with the old crank I only come up with 3 different color codes, but with the new crank I come up with like 5 different color codes. Doesnt this sound funny??
I tried calling my buddy that works up at Honda and said he would ask the techs that work up there. But he hasnt gotten back to me yet. So I’m coming onto here for advice.
Well I had the block acid dipped, Honed and decked.
THe crank was micro polished.
THe head was resurfaced and acid dipped with new seals installed.
All that added to around 215.00.
Which I dont think its a bad price for the quality of the work I got done.
Search in your area and call around to get some prices, another shopped wanted to charge me 250 to just resurface the head and install the seals. I was like WTF seriously!!!
WOW it seems like eternity since I last saw this thread. . .
Well. . . . . hope was lost for this car at the time being, at the time I was tryin to pull ends meet due to bad Economy.
Since then, I started focusin on my DD, a 91 Honda Prelude. Bought it for 450 and spend bout 350 or so gettin it legal and runnin.
Hence I had parts laying around for this car, and also started havin a good reliable income (;
Short story short I have my DD is runnin like a champ and now I need to proceed onto this left out project.
The only thing that sucked about the Lude was tryin to get a hold off aftermarket parts for the car. The support for it suckss!!
Now adays is either boost the stock B20a5 or swap it out for a H22 yet sacrificin crearance issues. like some swaps. Power comes at a price.
So I know gettin a hold of parts for this car would be like a walk in the park. Due to the major aftermarket suppoort for this car.
I been havin the itch for more power lately.
And been havin several thoughts in mine in how to do this build.
First theres the N/A or Boost Build…
and also the radical Supercharged built. …
Some things come into mind when all those thoughts are thrown up in the air. . .
So i come onto here tryin to see wat would be the most effective build for my likes. .
200-350 Hp range. . .
on mid grade gas
reliable
CC
Ps
A/c
good Suspension set up
Nice stance
possible ABS delete
some ideas at the time. .
I plan to document everything on here.
ANY positive or negative feedback is welcomed
So I hope I can get this done whitin a time period of 4 - 6 months if possible.
